A posh Manhattan building has ordered employees to only "speak English" - drawing the ire of workers who speak Spanish. London Terrace Gardens, located at 415-435 W. 23rd St. in Chelsea, issued a memo ordering them to only "speak English in all public areas as well as on the [walkie-talkie] radio."

Mmmmmmmm.....could very well be. I was trying to make the point that all the evidene points to the fact that anti-immigrant is a rare consensus issue. Appears all sides of the political spectrum are singing the same tune on this issue.

Last week I sat in the lobby of a municipal court. I watched as a line of people waited to approach one of two clerical windows to pay traffic fines. Several people conducted their entire transaction in Spanish (one of the clerks spoke both English and Spanish). Then I watched an Asian couple struggle to conduct their business in halting English. My thought was that, in two years, that Asian couple is going to be fluent in English and on their way to being fully assimilated. The Mexicans and Latin Americans will still know only Spanish and be stuck at the lowest rungs of society.
