WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Roberts Gates said Friday that a congressional resolution opposing President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq amounts to undercutting U.S. commanders in a way that "emboldens the enemy."
At his first Pentagon news conference since taking office, Gates was asked his reaction to the debate in Congress over the effect of such a nonbinding resolution. "It's pretty clear that a resolution that in effect says that the general going out to take command of the arena shouldn't have the resources he thinks he needs to be successful certainly emboldens the enemy and our adversaries," he said.
Gates talked to reporters as Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill prepared for the start debate next week on the resolution of opposition to President Bush's decision to send an additional 21,500 U.S. forces into battle in wartorn Iraq. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) said Friday that a quick test vote would likely be taken if Republicans try to delay or block the move.
Gates was referring to Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, who was confirmed by the full Senate on Friday to replace Gen. George Casey as the top American commander in Iraq. Petraeus has said he needs all 21,500 extra troops that Bush has ordered to Iraq in order to quell the raging sectarian violence in Baghdad.
"I think it's hard to measure that with any precision, but it seems pretty straightforward that any indication of flagging will in the United States gives encouragement to those folks," Gates said, referring to the anti-government forces in Baghdad. He added that he was certain this was not the intent of those who support the congressional resolution.
"But that's the effect," he said.
You bet your ass it does Mr. Gates.
I don't expect this to be reported on but it is out there in the public forum and that seems to be good enough these days.
Any organized opposition to our efforts in Iraq that undermines the President absolutely encourages the terrorists and lets them know that killing more Americans will make us cut and run.
So according to the left wing traitors there are 6,500,000 people killed in Iraq! It is a factor by 100 times more than all the official Iraqi government numbers! How can someone reaches this level of incredible stupidity to either come up or believe such a LIE.
I support the troops but am against the war.
How many of these left over hippies have gone to a soldiers funeral in their own state, county, city or town?
0!
How can someone reaches this level of incredible stupidity to either come up or believe such a LIE.

It's called the public school system.
The SecDef is doing quite nicely in his new shoes.
Yes he is
The Sum of All Fears, the Democrats in charge of anything.

The only people getting shot at are our brave men and women who count on the support of America back home.
Dummy leftists who organize pro-terrorists demonstrations, press-conferences and non-binding resolutions are the ones definitely not getting shot at when they go home at night to their comfortable homes.
Thank you for posting that link to the roundtable...I didn't know about that website.
I now have it bookmarked.
I notice it says it runs 24 hours...what kind of programming do they have??
"...shoes are donated by supporters and tagged with the name of an Iraqi killed in the war..."
Since it's Medea Benjamin, it should say "tagged with the name of a [terrorist who was UNFORTUNATELY] killed in the war..."
I'm a citizen.
But I don't know many military folks who hold the view that everyone else should sit down and shut up about the political decisions made by the government. They know how decidedly unpatriotic such a view would be. Some who claim to support them haven't figured that out.
FINALLY- a report that admits the truth!

Funny you say that. Most I know in the military think that the left and the media are filled with traitors. No body on here said they should be shot, excpet for you.
PING
Or are you actually smart enough to discern that political opposition is not treason?
Yes. And the new General said it would embolden the enemy, so what did the Democrats do? Embolden the enemy. Naturally.
This is a great snapshot look at how Democrats have been wrong on national security issues since our country was founded.
