Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said Wednesday he will introduce his own Senate resolution on Iraq that calls for a series of benchmarks and intensified congressional oversight.
McCain's resolution will be the third Senate resolution that deals with the president's call for a troop increase in Iraq.

"Considering the fact that Bush hasn't done a good job of selling the war to the American people, I have the gut feeling that most Americans in general have no clue about this war (or the fact that it's been going on for centuries)."
You nailed the problem right there.
He just lost the Pubie Primay.
Congress can fund the war or not.....that's it. We have one Commander in Chief....not 61.
What do you like about McCain?
Well, we just disagree on that one. When I hear a member of congress calling for "intensified congressional oversight", I hear "control".
I agree. McLame is basically (whether you like Rudy or not) driving fence-sitters to support Rudy just to guarantee this idiot never becomes pres.
Intensified congressional oversight.....I despise McCain.
You are not alone. NO mcVAin for me... now or ever.
Congress can also investigate. It can also attempt to pass other legislation that impacts the President's powers.
Two things I like about McCain: 1. whether you agree with him or not, he does what he says he's going to do; 2. he's been a strong supporter of the WOT and the action in Iraq.
I don't agree with him on everything, but I do believe he's an "honest broker."
Heck, all this is, CMA, for McCain, if things go wrong he will say look at my bill that passed in senate, they are all a bunch of blowhards and if you haven't figured it out, shame on you.
ok...thanks.
As I understand it, Congress can vote to cut off funds for a war. That's it. In other things, they have some oversight, but not war.
As I've said, I despise McCain. Have for years. There is absolutely nothing that would cause me to vote for him, for anything. But, that's just my opinion of the man. I pray that he won't be the Republican choice in 08.
Considering the amount of power the Executive Branch has practically invented over the past 140 years, the only thing they're spinning about is that it's taken this long for the Legislative Branch to stand up to the Executive Branch. Unfortunately it's too late and this, as with the other non-binding resolutions, is futile.
I know you're slamming McCain, but there's nothing stopping any of the other Republican Senators from introducing such a resolution.
This article speaks of two other resolutions but I only knew about one other. Maybe the one I don't know about echoes your sentiment.
Since he's my senator, I've watched everything over the past few years and I think the GOP would have held The Senate if McCain hadn't broke with the GOP so many times. Just the judges issue alone could have broke the back of the Dems if we would have taken that fight to it's end. The American people would have seen what left wing nuts these people were and more importantly, it would have portrayed a united GOP getting things done. Strong and dependable.
BUT.... with McCain's bargain basement plan, he was able to get the Ohio Senator to follow suit and a few others and look what we've got now. In my opinion a couple of those guys lost re-election because of him. Even George Allen would have had just that little bit of support he needed to get him over the top if people perceived the GOP as united and strong.
When the GOP was fractured, take note, and you will find more often than not McCain was part of the defectors or even more, the leader of them.
I'm sick of the guy. When times are tough, you've got to stick together. Leave it to McCain to jump ship every time.
Where are you? I was born in Chandler, and we visit my mother there in Tempe every year.
Peoria
zook - I don't know how you can still be on the McCain bandwagon.
I have not trusted him on this for a long time - what he says doesn't match up with what he does. What he does undermines the President and the War, repeatedly.
I have had trouble convincing some others of the above - until this last item. McCain's last few supporters (that I know) - have jumped ship. Even they can't convince themselves anymore that he won't wobble whichever way keeps him in the MSM's good graces.
That's not good in a CIC.
Did he say he wanted to be the President?
Count on this stupid putz to muddle things just as they're being clarified.
I refuse to bash McCain. It's not that I necessarily see him as the best candidate, but clearly he's miles better than anything the Dems could ever offer and I think he could beat any Dem. He also would fight a serious war on terror--and for me, that's issue number one.
Perhaps, but McCain actually thinks he is the Commander in Chier.
