Why is it classy to be more than minimally polite to scummy people? IMHO it cheapens the honest kindness you extend to good people.
Anything short of his gracious comments would have been perceived as bitter. And he IS the better man, so being less than gracious would have been beneath him.
What would you have suggested he said?
