Disgusting; that the Times Disgrace would sanction such a hateful 'investigation'. Would it be balanced reporting to perform a similar witch hunt on Virginia's junior Senator Jim Webb? (Please FREEP the poll that is attached to the article).

OLYMPIA MEOLA AND PAMELA STALLSMITH have just outed themselves as race-baiting demagogues.

I surely hope nobody holds against me the infractions of my great grandfather.

Some of the greatest men in American history owned slaves. Having ancestors who owned slaves is not, in itself, anything to be ashamed of.

An 1850 slave schedule lists Nathan D. Hargrove, a 22-year-old Henrico County resident, as owning a 60-year-old female slave.

Harold and Maude?

A search by librarians at The Times-Dispatch and the Library of Virginia shows that Hargrove's great-grandfather owned a slave. An 1850 slave schedule lists Nathan D. Hargrove, a 22-year-old Henrico County resident, as owning a 60-year-old female slave.

So they're going to crucify a man for the legal actions of his great grandfather 157 years ago? This goes several steps beyond an expos-facto prosecution.

Somewhere in my past, one of my ancestors undoubtably killed a man. Therefore, I am a murderer.

Somewhere in my past, one of my ancestors undoubtably raped a woman. Therefore, I am a rapist.

Somewhere in my past, one of my ancestors undoubtably stole. Therefore, I am a thief.

This is beyond silly, right into lunacy.

Of course the sponsor of the slavery apology resolution is a member of a racially exclusive club: the black caucus.

But that is NOT news.

re: disparaged blacks and Jews

That by itself is grounds for having serious doubts about this man's fitness to serve in a legislative body. The fact a distant relative owned a slave is completely irrelevant to the story.

I am really tired of hearing how badly politics have slipped into the gutter and always hearing it from a Democrat whose party led the charge into the gutter.

Yah know, I almost ordered up a big box of "I don't care" after reading about this finding. Then I realized I already had it and I just don't care!

Many black Americans today likely had relatives who were slave owners through interracial marriage, or (gasp) ancestors in Africa who owned slaves. It's not like it was a dinstincly American practice.

That means that Hargrove's promotion of Juneteenth is hypocritical and he should certainly give his entire estate and sign over his income to the descendants of slaves or to Mrs. Clinton's campaign before pleading publicly for forgiveness. Or he could switch parties and attack gunowners and all will be forgiven and his hateful horrible heritage will be expunged.

Maybe these loons have something...

The Democratic party was responsible for fighting to preserve slavery, and then later for fighting against civil rights.

Therefore, every modern Democrat inherits that legacy and must pay reparations.

(This is sarcasm)

This kind of crap just continues here in Virginia. I am sick of this "poor blacks" nonsense. I would be embarrased by it if I were black.

The witch hunt is on. Newsrooms have been bitten in recent years by the "diversity" bug with organized groups of "African-American journalists", "Gay journalists," "Hispanic journalists," etc. This is no joke as Bernie Goldberg has pointed out in his writing.

These highly politicized groups are pushing a more radical agenda at local newspapers everywhere with officially sanctioned "diversity" policies that include quotas or their equivalent on who to feature in stories. We need more females, African-Americans, Hispanics in our stories.
And of course we don't want to show too many mugshots of minorities in crime stories, either.

This witch hunt of the descendents of slave owners seems right in line with such an agenda.

Our Sunday newspaper did something like this by publishing a story about the family whose descendents helped the Confederates during the Civil War. A little girl passed a note in a bouquet of flowers to the Confederate army that occupied my town during the Civil War. The note described the positions of the Union soldiers defending a key bridge. The bridge got burned just in time to keep the Southerners from heading towards the state capital (Harrisburg).

Diversity wants to reignite old conflicts and politicize them so new laws can be passed to make government more powerful and people less free. Reparations anyone.

This harassment is not unlike the treatment afforded the sons and grandsons of the Tsarist era Russian aristocracy under the Communist regime. While most of the aristocrats fled Russia or were executed after the Russian Revolution, their relatives who bore surnames associated with the old nobility were often denied employment or access to education. Our homegrown leftists would love to do the same thing with the old Southern elite.
