Not very far across the gulf. An electric boat could sit on the IO side of the straits on batteries, just waiting...and it would be extremely hard to tell if they didn't move much.

I saw a good movie a few days ago on the TCM channel with Clarke Gable and Burt Lancaster ( Run Silent, Run Deep ) were they evaded a Japanese sub by shutting of their engines and remain silent, and then surfaced and take a few shots at a Japanese ship to cause the Japanese sub to surface so they can take out the enemy sub.
