Webb to give State of the Union response
Freshman Sen. Jim Webb, a Vietnam War veteran, will deliver the official Democratic response to President Bush's State of the Union Address, where the war in Iraq is expected to be a central topic.
As a combat veteran, Webb, D-Va., "understands personally how crucial it is to find a new direction in Iraq and begin to bring the war to a close," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) said Tuesday in announcing their choice of Webb to respond to Bush's Jan. 23 address to Congress.

Webb may be a war hero, but he is an idiot when it comes to politics. Go read his op ed that reads like it came from Karl Marx and will be evident this guy is an idiot.
John O'Neill was a naval officer, first in his class at Law School. Meant nothing to the RATS; they called him every name in the book and threatened to sue him and stations that carried the Swiftvets ads.
Exactly, Chris LaCivita received a purple heart in Gulf War I. But because he was involved with the Swift Boat Vets you should hear what he's called in the Virginia blogosphere.
Whatever ...
SENATOR Webb, whatever he may have been prior to entering electoral politics, is now just another dirty stinking low-life democRAT.
I can hardly wait ... as a Virginian I am so proud ;)
This business of threatening to beat people up is going to get him into real trouble. Wonder if his ol'buddy Jim Moran loans his ex-wife out for beatings ~
On the other hand, I doubt I will take any small children near him, nor give him a chance to lay hands on me or my wife.
He's UNSTABLE, as are many of the voters who were attracted to his approach to life.
Are the Dems going to have him wear his new red armband?
I'd LOVE to hear Bush state that the carriers have been bombing the crap out of Iran for the last 30 minutes as his SOTU address wraps up.
Think we'd see a democrap's head go up like Scanners?
"Gentleman" Jim only did that when he had too much gin, which makes his wife argumentative.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
Be careful, he might get sex**al! I thought he was a centrist?
The rational for his Senate run is his opposition to the war. The real reason is his own ambition. Did he think this war would last much beyond Bush's term or that the Democrats could shut the war down without Bush's agreement? Did he believe the next Presidential candidate, of any party, would run on a continue the war platform? I don't think he did.
The practical effect of the Democratic victory is a more likely defeat in this war and Webb was in a better position than most to see this. He would have to remember the political effects of the Tet offensive. This election is as bad. The American electorate plurality that voted threw in the towel, the enemy was watching, and Webb was there to get paid.
Webb might think it makes no difference, because if the GOP won and the war continued under a GOP majority we would still lose because the people of Iraq are not culturally or institutionally suited to peaceful Democracy and they never would be. That could be the case but I don't see any of these pols running on that postion.
Webb joined the bad guys in running with the Democrats. If the Democrats as a whole were supporters of the troops why have they consistantly been less supportive of Military appropriations than the GOP. Is it remotely possible a former Secretary of the Navy doesn't know this?
Timothy McVeigh was a decorated veteran too, and look what he did for America.
