"In 15 years, scientists say, the snows of Kilimanjaro will simply melt away. ... Kilimanjaro is not the only place that is threatened. Glaciers and polar ice are melting. Coral reefs are dying as the seas get too warm. Lakes and rivers in colder climates are freezing later and thawing earlier each year, disrupting the life cycles of native plants and animals. What is causing this breakdown in nature?

As man increasingly understands nature he increases control of nature. Technology advances exponentially. The Law of Accelerating Returns  Just now entering the knee of technology curve. Obviously conscious man has plenty of ability to control nature beyond what nature itself alone could create. He has sent probes beyond our solar system. How long (or short) until conscious beings control the cosmos for their benefit or even create new universes?

Also, is there a shorter piece, or a scientist who I should follow who my professor friends would find credible (i.e., tenured at a leading American university)?

Probably not. The believers can list more tenured professors on their side, I think. Any credentialed expert on the skeptic side has credentialed experts opposing him and his arguments.

A caution: If you come up with a plausible skeptic argument, test it against the believer's FAQ at Real Climate. If you think it survives the RC FAQ, you can "return volley" at least once.

Hot air from ignorant reporters and fearmongering politicians.

Even the elitists with an attitude are trumped by God's will.

I sure hope I don't experience the wrath of eternal elitist damnation because of my attitude.

Interesting...

It does seem to show a strong correlation between temperature increases and CO2 levels, but I guess it's one of those "Chicken and egg" things...Anyone have any insight into why the correlation?

I think ice on Mars is melting, too. Is that evidence of an advanced civilization on Mars damaging their atmosphere?

It's currently 15 degrees here (median temperature is usually 41-43 degrees). I doln't know how much more global warming we can take!

It might have something to do with that big bright light in the sky.

As opposed to that big dumb liberal environmentalist-wacko spouting hot air!

"scrape some of that global warming off my windshield this morning"

Funny!

In an uber-liberal town like Seattle I get lots of opportunities to get in digs like yours. And you're spot on about it getting under their (transparently) thin skins.

I love it!

"if it weren't for global warming, we'd still be in the great ice age".

GW (global warming) actually undid the "snowball earth".

The end of Snowball earth

It's more than just a coincidence that the Polar ice caps on Mars are melting at the same rate as the ones on Earth.

Martians drive SUVs also!!!

George W. Bush owns the Hummer franchise on Mars.!!!

the snows of Kilimanjaro will simply melt away

Does that mean that we won't have to read that dreadful book anymore.

I have found that the best way to deal with the "global warming" crowd is to just laugh it off, make fun of them...that pisses them off more than reams of "scientific data".

Roger that.

A friend of mine recently sent out an email talking about the "global warming crisis". I figured I couldn't let that stand so I sent him a reply refering him to the Michael Crichton essay "Aliens Cause Global Warming" here:

http://www.michaelcrichton.com/speeches/index.html

And to the website of Professor Richard Muller, Dept of Physics at UC Berkeley, which has several essays on this subject:

http://muller.lbl.gov/

I then added that "All I know is that 18,000 years ago most of the North American continent was covered with ice. Then those Neanderthals started driving their SUV's and here we are. :-)"

No response so far.

”There is one source of global warming. The Sun.”

There is more to it then that when 80 to 90% of the heat on Earth is from the Earth its self. The earth is basically a lava ball with a thin crust.

That's an interesting statement. I have never heard of anything remotely resembling the percentages of which you speak. Do you have a link?

Al Gore is an idiot; he doesn’t even know how to lie. When Temperature increases ice caps at high altitudes will increase, lower altitudes will decrease. Over all you will get a net increase in ice caps.

Take a look at Greenland for example:
