What time is it there?
Here's the story from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from about 40 minutes ago:
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii tonight after a 8.4 magnitude earthquake east of the Kuril Islands off Japan. If a tsunami was generated, the estimated arrival time in Hawaii is 12:23 a.m. Saturday at Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai, 12:41 a.m. in Honolulu and 12:58 a.m. in Hilo. It was not known whether a tsunami was generated, according to the center, but preliminary reports from Japans Meteorological Agency said a 3.3-foot-high tsumami could be headed for the northeastern coast of Japans northern island of Hokkaido. State and county civl defense officials are aware of the warning. Were in the wait and see mode right now, said John Cummings, Oahu Civil Defense Agency spokesman. The Japanese agency said a 8.4 magnitude earthquake occurred at about 2:23 p.m. Saturday (6:23 p.m. today Hawaii time) off the Kuril islands. The epicenter coordinates are 154.4 east latitude, 46.7 north latitude. A tsunami warning is in effect for Russia, Japan and the Marcus islands, according to the Ewa Beach-based center. A watch is in effect for Hawaii, Wake Island, Midway Atoll, Johnston island, the Northern Marianas, Guam, the Marshall islands, Taiwan, Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk, the Philippines, Kosrae, and Beleu.
I would head inland for the high ground just in case.
Listen for the news of tsunami striking islands between us and its point of origin. Midway, Guam will alert us.
Keep tuned in here, someone will surely ping you.
I have special folks living on Maui but not on the water like you. So I am not going to ping them.
I will make a big effort to ping you if I hear anything.
