This is an ugly fact of human nature that I personally learned the hard way.
After an accident I had years ago I was overwhelmed with the love, compassion, and support of many people. Total strangers went out of their way to offer me their prayers and good intentions.
But...there was also an element "out there" who thrived on the rumor/gossip mill.
There really are people who simply make stuff up out of the air just to be vindictive and cruel. It seems to be entertainment for them when others are already down.

This case is fascinating - but to people like that, it is a great opportunity to spread their poison.

No one should believe anything unless it is released by the police or the families.

There was a big Media blitz in our town over alleged racism during a Pee-wee football game. The papers make a big stink because some of our kids wore blackface and black wigs.

They never bothered to mention the kids also wore bright orange beaks to show support for their team: the "Blackhawks".

Eventually, we had a bunch of black people from opposing teams start sticking up for our kids and the media let it go.
