Assault Rifle, Ammo Seized at Border Crossing

(Champlain, N.Y.) AP -- A fully loaded automatic AK74 assault rifle and 417 rounds of ammunition were seized at the Champlain border crossing in northeastern New York.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say officers stopped Adam Predin, 31, a Serbian-born U.S. citizen from Phoenix, as he applied for admission into the United States on Tuesday.

Predin told officers he was returning after being refused entry into Canada. He claimed the purpose of his travel to Canada was to play golf in the Quebec area.

While checking his vehicle, officers say they discovered the assault rifle between the front passenger and rear seat, concealed under clothing.

The assault rifle and ammunition were turned over to New York State Police, who arrested Predin on charges of possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle.

How in the World did this individual go from a failed crossing in Canada, to Mexico with a full-auto AK-47 & ammo?

Champlain, NY, is in New York, not Mexico. I also doubt it was actually a fully-auto version. Probably just a semiauto AK-74 knockoff. Reporters... being what they are...

There are more fully auto AK's around than what you might think.

The article say "automatic AK74". Remembering that most people don't differentiate between "automatic" and Full automatic" I wonder which it is.

Something stinks about this article. having a loaded fire arm was rhe charge yet they declare it was a full auto machinegun and there was no charge to that effect

Full auto is not against the law if ya got a tax stamp. The loaded weapon in car charge is a state law so I figure that would be the arresting charge, more charges later probably.

I agree. I would bet my own semiauto AK74 that his was NOT "fully automatic."

"They are known to be very hard on someone carrying weapons into their country."

They aren't allowed to be armed are they? Perhaps they were afraid.

A golf course is a waste of a perfectly good rifle range.

In Texas, this would have been PERFECTLY LEGAL...it is just not a crime.

It was a semi-automatic sporting rifle. It said it was fully LOADED, not fully AUTO. BTW...if a round was not chambered, then it was UNLOADED. Period. Regardless of the status of the mag.

I don't believe he was playing golf!

Everyone knows you play "Skeet-Golf" with a 12 Guage Shot gun. You wait in the rough near the putting green. When you see a beautiful drive coming down the fairway towards the green you blast it out of the air!

Your score is determined based on how close the ball would have been to the cup.

I once made Tiger Woods cry.

Wow, you got an AK74. Is it any better than an AK47?

So have I and I also live in Phoenix. I wonder what's going on.

That is why I live in Texas.I have three VA appointments at three different locations, and when I leave them, sometimes I am very weak. All total,I will travel around 1000 miles, and I like to know I am not prey and can defend myself as I have to make numerous stops at some not so nice places.I also have a wife to worry about.I feel for the other states, but they elect their own lawmakers.Being vulnerable is no way to live.

If we had a fence on the Mexican border this wouldn't have happened.

If you've read the latest installment of Boston T. Party's "Gun Bible", he raves. It does have lighter recoil than the AK47. Its recoil is on par with that of an AR15, but I prefer the operating characteristics and accuracy of the AR15. As to the relative lethality of the 5.45x39mm vs. M855 or M193(? 55gr FMJ), I can't say. The AK74 is "interesting", but I shoot the AR15 much more accurately.
