Brownback to Move on Presidential Bid

WASHINGTON - Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican and favorite son of the religious right, will officially enter the presidential race later this month in his home state.
"He will be fully announcing on January 20 in Topeka, Kansas," Brian Hart, the senator's spokesman, said Friday. The move was expected even though Brownback set up an exploratory committee in December to gauge whether he had enough support for a full-blown campaign.
After the announcement in Kansas, Hart said Brownback will fly to Washington to participate in the anti-abortion march marking the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling.
Brownback is a lesser-known candidate in a crowded GOP presidential field that likely will include Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor. Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, rounds out the top tier. All three are considering runs but, to various extents, also have records or positions on social or fiscal issues that don't sit well with the Republican base.
So, Brownback - a Catholic revered by the GOP's conservative wing for his opposition to abortion and gay marriage - sees an opening in the race for someone like him.
At the time, Brownback also called for a return to an American culture that promotes family values. He said the main focus of his campaign would be "to save and improve lives, rebuild families and renew the culture" in the United States that supports the institution of family.
Brownback, 50, was raised on a farm near tiny Parker, Kan. - population 281 today - where his parents still live.
His first foray into national politics was in 1976 while a student at Kansas State University, where he campaigned for Ronald Reagan in his unsuccessful quest to wrest the GOP nomination from Gerald Ford.
After receiving his law degree from the University of Kansas in 1982, he practiced law in Manhattan, Kan., and served as secretary of the state board of agriculture. He was named a White House fellow in 1990, and worked in the office of the U.S. trade representative.
Brownback was elected to the House in 1994, part of the Republican revolution that gave the GOP control of both the House and Senate for the first time in 40 years.
Two years later, Brownback was elected to the Senate, winning the seat Bob Dole vacated to run for the presidency. Brownback, who promised to serve no more than two terms, has said he will not seek re-election in 2010.
Apart from that concern I would be open to looking more closely at Sen. Brownback.
I'm willing to look at all the candidates. There has not been a good track record for candidates out of the senate. I asked the question on FR not too long ago about the last (republican?) president to come from the Senate. I think someone said Coolidge, but I don't really remember. It was long ago.
Lord knows that Dole was a huge mistake and a huge disaster. (Perot was the real mistake.)
What a colossal waste of money if this guy decides to run for president. Romney, McCain, Hagel, Rudy(except for the WOT)are all Rinos. If a true conservative gets into the race he will have our side of the Republican party all to himself.
I don't know Duncan Hunter that well either, just that he supports the effort in Iraq and gets an A on the subject of illegal immigration. That's a pretty good start.
He was a cosponsor of the legislation

click on cosponsors, he is 1 of 6
Is there not one conservative giant amongst us??? Perhaps with some glue and duct tape...
I hope that events fall out that will make that choice clear for us all, be it Hunter, Brownback, Gingrich, etc.
You are right - he is worse than a RINO. A Rino will give away your retirement to illegal aliens - Brownback will also give away your town to African Osamas who will be living off your taxes via welfare. Brownback knew this was a disaster - that's why he made sure none of the Muslims ended up in Kansas. He is a hypocrite.
To get my vote in the general election, Rudi will have to declare a change in his postion to a minimum: pro-life except rape, incest, life of mother.
If he doesn't he'll not get my vote in the primary or general. McCain automatically doesn't get my vote for crimes against conservatives, freedom, and common sense.
The best idea guy and the best in front of a camera is Newt. He comes with a lot of personal baggage over what could be viewed as a cruel divorce.
I'm open to any others. But, you are right. Conservatives need to settle on one candidate so they don't disperse their votes all over the map. If no one wins the primaries, then a brokered convention won't help: it'll go to McCain.
Thanks for the post. For some reason I thought the comprehensive immigration bill was the McCain/kennedy bill. So Brownback is right up there with them.

Hey, There are some areas Sam is good. From his own site, he supports amnesty and other programs in that area.
The more candidates we have the better. GOOD platforms are formed that way. I'm not backing anyone yet.
Just watching the local news and what is going on with the border, etc. it makes me support Hunter that much more.
Some brutally honest reporting? Be still my heart!!!
YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! PRAISE THE LORD!!!!! Onyx, thanks for the ping!! Here me screaming from SD to the shores of the US!!!
I hear ya all the way down here in Mississippi!
YYYEEEEEEEEEHHHHAAAAAAA!!!!
I will be rejoicing from here until Christmas next!!! Lord, bless the primary. Kick the liberal butts in the states with some major moving from the christian conservative grassroots! Lord, it is TIME!!
This man is really something!! He is wise, God-fearing, and isn't afraid of standing for something he believes is right!!
I beg to differ with you about your comment that he won't stand up to the heat! I have heard him speak publicly. He came to SD and stood up for the Pro-Life movement in the last election cycle when our own governor and US Senator were HIDING!! A man from out of state came in and took up the torch!!! I am sure there was a LOT of heat trying to keep him away, and to still his voice. SD politics is not far from IA politics and most other states any more...it is no longer party(R) against party(D), but conservative against liberal (or politically correct - moderate!) within each party!! So you can bet there was a ton of pressure trying to keep Brownback OUT of SD, just like there was on the Governor and the US Senator to keep their mouths shut!
I get a chuckle out of you all...you want someone who you think needs to be tough on immigration, so you want them to spend your tax dollars and put up a fence. If he didn't vote for the fence, you won't like him or vote for him? So you WANT him to SPEND your TAX DOLLARS on a fence?? Is it the wises way to be effective?
I have met him, as well and spoken with him.
so...now you have 2 people, both of whom have spoken with the candidate, and each has differing opinions and quite different views/ vision.
My summation is that he IS presidential material, and he WILL make a great President!! He has more guts than 99% currently in the White House! Brownback also has a vision that sees more than with the naked eye.... He has been blessed with a wisdom to see the truth of matters that seem to be misunderstood or not understood by many others.
So . . . on this thread are we liberal or conservative? party lines don't really exist any more. are we going to say one thing, and then hold to another and contradict ourselves while we are at it?
I met the man. I spoke with the man. I heard the man speak. He is in DC for a reason. He has been there a while, and still has scruples, principles, morals, and is still VERY conservative.
Here! Here! Ghost of FReepers Past!
ask apackof2 about hunter. you will get a few comments. i will refrain.
brownback!! the man with a backbone!
HE IS A GODLY MAN! He would NEVER stand for GAY MARRIAGE!! I can't believe I nearly heard from you in the same breath, you would vote for him, you like him, he is pro-life and then you ask a question like that!!???
Again! The man came to SD, NOT his state, to take a stand that the Governor and US Senator WOULD NOT vocally or visibly take a stand for! He has moral, ethics and principles that are higher than most Republicans currently in office.
you guys drive me NUTS!! Quit talking out of both sides of your mouths! GRAB HOLD and STAND FIRM!!!! either you are a liberal republican or a conservative republican. Don't try to shade it as politically correct "moderate"!
"Let your yeah be yeah and your nay be nay!" And then we wonder why our country is in the condition it is in??!!!
