Announcement Could Come as Early as Tomorrow
Jan. 4, 2007 - ABC News has learned that President Bush will nominate Zalmay Khalilzad to be the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Khalilzad is currently the U.S. ambassador to Iraq. The announcement may come as soon as tomorrow. Khalilzad's departure from Baghdad will happen as soon as he is confirmed as U.N. ambassador.
Ryan Crocker, currently the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, will be nominated to replace Khalilzad in Baghdad. Khalilzad has been U.S. ambassador to Iraq since June 2005. He is the highest ranking Muslim in the U.S. government and one of the few officials at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad fluent in Arabic.
A consummate dealmaker, Khalilzad played an active role trying to push the Iraqi government toward political reconciliation. Khalilzad's efforts aliented some in the Shia-dominated Iraqi government who complained that Khalilzad was biased in favor of Iraq's Sunnis. Khalilzad is a Sunni Muslim. Before becoming U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Khalilzad served as U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. Prior to that, he served as a Special Presidential Envoy and Ambassador at Large for the Free Iraqis.
Khalilzad has a bachelor's and a master's degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
He sounds like a good choice, on a number of levels. Does anyone know how supportive this fellow is of Israel?
Since he is a member/affiliate of several neoconservative/pro-Israel organisations and think tanks, it's safe to say he is pro-Israel. I haven't found many comments on the Palestinian issue, but he has strongly warned on the threat Iran poses to Israel.
My, my, those Kos-freaks truly are psycho..... I followed your link and then found a page with their rants against John Bolton, and those nutjobs were going crazy in December when Bolton called for Iran's Ah-m-a-whackjob to be charged with inciting genocide!! Their hatreds against Israel were so strong that many of them actually defend Ah-m-a-whackjob.....
The UN is so irrelevant that it doesn't matter who goes there. Here's how it will play out, propose sanctions and get vetoed by Russia and China. Just the usual game.
See post #59 and #82. There ARE decent Muslims out there. They just don't get much publicity.
ah, yes....
One of the dirty little secret is that the libs in the Dem party sound pretty anti-semitic....and yet, the Jews in American mostly vote Dem Party....
It is a pity...but, it is the same for African-Americans...they are helped more by GOP plans...but, they vote overwhelmingly Dem Party.
BTW...the same is happening with the Muslims.
go figure.
Shrewd move by Bush. The administration is pulling a "Cindy Sheehan" here by nominating an outstanding Muslim, who is unassailable.
I think the US is having a competition for Khalilizad from the UN....
I bet he would rather take a job where he won't have to answer smarmy questions from the dems in the Senate...don't you??
I question the timing. W's moves today are taking some of the wind out of Nancy's and the Dems big day.
Bush seems to be beginning a process which, at BEST, is informed by the longest of long-term goals: somehow, WE
have to take the lead in installing OUR Muslims in positions of influence, in the fond hopes of ---what?--
convincing the half-a-billion Islamic fence-sitters we are not so bad and actually practice Affirmative Action as regards people of their faith? This guys resume "looks good", but how smart could he be if he actually BELIEVES in the Sunni branch of Islam, the same "faith" Saddam Hussein "believed in"? I'm afraid I don't like this at all, and I am not suffering from xenophobia, I'm suffering from xenonausea/ (check out the article at www.macjohnson.com
regarding the Dubai Ports debacle, called "It's not Xenophobia, it's Xenonausea"/)
While it is scary to think what some muslims have done for terrorism, not all muslims are terrorists.
From what I've seen, Bush knows what he's doing when nominating or appointing people. I don't think he'd nominate someone to such a high stature, unless they deserved it.
"Midnight Basketball" was Gore's "Big Idea". When it went nowhere, he searched and searched and finally found a much smaller idea he could do a movie about : global warming.

i got that joke, at least ;)
maybe your standards are too high
I can't get proud and happy about this. Maybe later.
Thanks.
That would be a whole lot better than becoming liberal internationalist weenies ourselves...
I wonder if he will take is Oath of Office on the Koran?
There is something wrong. Essentially the error is in thinking that the islamofascists are moslem. They are not, but islam does not have a method of excommunication aside from knocking off the heretics.
