Reasonable analysis but things are moving faster today than in 76. But good comparison. I remember that election well. The media went a little crazy back then too :). Remember the power sharing ideas, the co-Presidency of Reagan and Ford? But as far as Obama, yeah he's probably still too green but the guy is obviously going places. Big places. I hope we don't do something redneck and stupid as a society. We might find this person, one who holds up an example of decency and goodness for people that desperately need to see this, one who is legit because of his stupid politics, as a force for good in our society and the world. Just saying.

In other words it couldn't have ever been Colin Powell because he wasn't authentic to fellow black Americans. I don't see this person ever coming from the Republican party. Hope for political compromise to keep things from getting too loopy and take a chance someday with whoever fits the bill I say. It's a win win for folks in my humble opinion.

You and I hang out at Free Republic, so we are by definition political freaks. One thing that I think hasn't changed and will not change: the average voter doesn't start looking at the candidates until after Labor Day. If you present him with someone he doesn't know, he's going to tend to go to the other candidate. And he won't know our at present unknown candidate, and he won't get to know him well enough to feel comfortable in eight weeks of September-October 2008, especially with the Drive-by Media hatefest that will be thrown at any Republican candidate. Result: Dem candidate (probably Hillary) wins.

The only known Republican candidates are McCain and Guiliani, and neither is a conservative. They could win with the average voter, except the "Real Conservatives!!!" here and elsewhere on the web will call them RINO's and stay home in droves, like they did in November. I'd rather have a conservative than a RINO/moderate, but I'd rather have a RINO/moderate than a Democrat. But I don't see a way either can win.

And problems at the top of the ticket will mean problems farther down as well.

Yeah, a lot can change in the next 22 months, but you can't count on it breaking our way. On the other hand, you've got to play the hand you're dealt, so no matter how difficult the situation appears, it doesn't mean I'm giving up. But optimistic I'm not.

A year from now maybe things will look different.

"Name one that anyone knows".

Good point, but I am willing to support the search.

As much as I was not a Gerald Ford fan, I will say this about him. At least he was real.

Today, we are given facade and PR gestures instead of real depth of character. Empty suits playing to the media. Imagine an actual conservative that was able to get the message across.

IF and ONLY if GWB soars in the polls (which implies the MSM and the DemonicRats are completely discredited by events, a *really* big if), THEN it is possible Jeb could run, get nominated, and win.

If all of that comes about I will happily vote for him -- I think he'd make a great POTUS.

Likelyhood of occuring: somewhere between UFOs actually landing at O'Hare and Ahmadinejad converting to Judaism and getting circumcised by an Israeli mohel...

And he and she are all for amnesty for all the millions of identity thieving illegals already here, waiting to take over Aztlan. There's not a single candidate who will stand up and reject the amnesty idea and really control illegal immigration in either party. La Republica esta frita!

I voted for GW three times and I have no regrets. The alternatives were disgusting. We must do a better job in the primary this time.

It's not so much that I support Hillary as it is that I'm strongly against John McCain. I hope that it doesn't come down to that. But, at the end of the day, Hillary has a heck of a lot more to lose if we get taken over by the Muslims than McCain does. While she may or may not be a snake, she at least has a desire to survive.

Do NOT get wrong. I am a Regan conservative.

McCain is a HIDEOUS choice. This is what I'm saying. He is by far the worst person on our list and frankly, there are some Democrats I would prefer over him (and that is saying a LOT). Not saying I like Hillary. Saying I hate McCain so much as for him to leapfrogged a number of Dems on towards the bottom of my list (which is an accomplishment). McCain can talk a good talk, but I don't trust him to ACT responsibly. He proved this last term that he can't be trusted to do anything but look out for #1.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm totally against McCain as well. I understand your passion for conservatism.

FRiend, I did my time in the Persian Gulf making Kofi rich in the 90's and I have close family serving in country currently. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. W and Franks screwed the pooch by going in really light and not killing anyone along the way, but this job needed to be done a long time a go. W is mopping up Clinton's mess.
