it turns out that the long-lasting, swirl-shaped light bulbs known as compact fluorescent lamps are to the nation’s energy problem what vegetables are to its obesity epidemic: a near perfect answer, if only Americans could be persuaded to swallow them. But now Wal-Mart Stores, the giant discount retailer, is determined to push them into at least 100 million homes.

I use quite a few of these at home. I would encourage everyone to get a bit more wattage than you think you'll need, as the lowest wattage flo-bulbs are a bit dim. They are great in ceiling fixtures, and gooseneck desk and bedlamps.

Three- (or perhaps it was four-) way versions are also available, although I'm not sure that was at WalMart. I think I saw them at Meijer, which is a big regional chain that started with a single grocery store in Greenville Michigan.

Next, we'll see LED "bulbs" for even more savings. Some of the LED flashlights are POSes, but some are excellent. I do not recommend getting those ones at Dollar Tree, those flat ones which are easily mistaken for thumb drives, and are piss-poor lookalikes of those excellent Garrity ones.
