WASHINGTON Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.
As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned that yesterday, Susan and her brother, Michael, stood for hours to shake the hand and "thank" each mourner who came by to pay respects to their father. I didn't know that. God bless them. How very special they are.

It is a gorgeous day here in Washington, so that's a nice touch for the day.

MAybe she just looked older because of her grief. I know the week my dad died I looked about 70.

I heard that the Bushes had visited Mrs. Ford, but I did not know that they had invited the kids and grandkids to the White House, What a great thing for them.

I'm stuck with the networks until Fox local switches to FNC, maybe at 10 a.m. On ABC, they showed the cathedral--nice to see Nancy Reagan. Mr. & Mrs. Slick looked to be chatting with Jimmah?(thought he was a no-show)

The comment on Fox was that since they had all been born after their grandfather left the White House, it was a first-time visit for all of them.
What a nice thing for the President to do. I am sure he showed them the Oval Office and a few of the other places where their grandfather made history.

I think I'm just aware of it since the Ford "kids" are all my peers (all were born 1950-1957; I was born in 1955). It's the only time in my life there was someone "my age" in the White House when I was growing up, except for Caroline.

The day of my grandfather's funeral was gorgeous as well. It helps. It is a day my Grandpa and President Ford would have liked.

For today, could you lay aside the political disagreement?

This is reminding me of my dad's funeral..sniff {{HUGS, Miss Marple}}
I only remember a few things from my dad's funeral .. I had just turned 8 yr. old when he died
But I do remember there were alot of people there .. my dad was very active in our parish .. and I remember the viewing, there was a snow storm and the lights were knocked out for a bit and we were all standing in the funeral parlor holding flashlights and candles

OK tears again! I was a kid when President Ford took over, so I am sure for the grandkids it was a very special visit.

I agree. One Ford thread started with someone snippily saying, "He was pro-abortion, you know". Classy, huh?
To: Miss Marple
President and Mr.s Bush had the Ford children and grandchildren to the White House last night. They also went to Blair House to visit Mrs. Ford. OUT OF CAMERA SHOT, I might add. Two GOOD families. I'm proud of both.

It's because they are just words from a type writer. Surely, in person, they would not be that rude. (If they are, their mama's would be ashamed of them)

Bush 41 looks really, really good today. Young even!
