I don't really know any details. I did hear of some teachers being attacked a short while ago, though, and just read from the BBC of some schools in the north being bombed also.
According to the BBC there does seem to be uncertainty as to who is responsible, both for the school bombings, and the ones in Bangkok. Here's a link to the article I read this morning:

Thailand is currently governed by a military junta, lead by a Muslim general. This is what makes it hard to pin the bombs on an organization. It may be Islamofascists or it may be an organizatio that wants to have elections forthwith.

No, the Thai government is currently led by an appointed Buddhist Prime Minister and has been for a few months now.

As for the second part, I don't believe it at all. The bombings are going to give the government more power, not less. I still have no doubt the bombs were set off by Muslims involved in the current insurgency going on here.

Thanks Killjoy. I have several ESL students ( highschool) who live in Bangkok, and who are home for Xmas break. They thought theyt were returning to a relatively peaceful situation but obviously that is not the case.

I get the feeling that these bombings are as much a suprise to ordinary Thais as they are to us.

I wouldn't want to be a Muslim living in Bangkok over the next few months,as you say the Islamofascists indeed did this thing.

Sondhi, the Muslim general who led the coup, is a good guy. He is the former head of Army Special Warfare and also fought alongside US troops in Vietnam. The guys has incredibly good credentials.

There are a number of reasons for the coup, but the final straw was the former PM going after the military. For the last few years, the PM was going through the government replacing high ranking individuals with his own supporters. He had been doing this with the military also and there were a few, including Sondhi, that started publically going against him.

To make a long story short, there was an 'attempted assassination' against the former PM about 6 months ago in which a car with explosives was found outside the PM's residence. The PM made a big deal out of it and started going on public attacks against the military while releasing no evidence at all. To many, including myself, it looked like the PM staged the event to grab more power.

Well, the military finally had enough of it and that is one of the major reasons things happened as they did. Of course, there are a lot of other issues such as corruption, but this was the final straw.

John Kerry was in Vietnam too. Does that make him a good guy? I'm sure most posters in the Free Republic believe in democracy and they probably do not want the U. S. military to take control of the U. S. just like the way "Sondhi" did to Thailand. Just because some well organized paid protesters demonstrated against the elected PM, Thaksin, it does not justify the overthrowing of the government. If you would read the political Thai web-boards, you will see that the majority of Thais regret the loss of their elected leader.

The Thai military junta is doing the same thing the Spanish government did after the 2004 Madrid bombings: lying to its people. The Spanish government concealed the role of Islamic terrorists and blamed it on the Basque. The Thai junta is concealing the role of Islamic terrorists and are blaming it on the government it recently overthrew.

Yet despite this evidence and history, the junta (lead by a Muslim) is exonerating the Muslim insurgents and is pinning the blame on their arch-enemy: the deposed government. There is a huge difference. I am friends with some of those who have served under Sondhi when he was at Lopburi. They have nothing but respect for the man.

I am looking at my copy of the Bangkok Post dated June 7, 1981. Headline: Three explosions rock city (Bangkok)- 40 hurt. It states that Muslim separatists in the south are back in the news again...

The reason I have the paper is because I was about 30 feet from the blast in Bangkok's, Indra Shopping Arcade on that date, twenty plus years ago. The attacks were not and are not limited to the southern border.
