"So you're back again. How many squids on shore leave behave better than college students on spring break? Anybody you know of getting tossed from the service for getting blind drunk and hiring strippers? And these are people running a nuke sub?"

I never left.

All sailors that I know behaved better than those kids. Those that went to strip shows went to the night clubs where that activity went on. All were adults not children and no one was ever charged with any malfeasance. The only person I know of that was tossed off of submarines was tossed for radioing a valve lineup. A rather dangerous thing to do on a submarine. Some of the nose coiners rode some motorbikes off the pier at St Croix. We paid for them of course out of the rec fund and that was about the silliest thing our boat was guilty of.

I did hear that Fin Back went to sea once with a dancer on the sail plane and I think the skipper was relieved. But that is about it.

I don't see any connection with the Duke case here. Nor any justification for the behaviors of the little darlings and their adult supervision, regardless of what happened in the service, to anyone.

So, what is your point? That anything goes? That males should be taught that denigration of women is acceptable? That there are no limits? What?

As I recall, Al Sharpton did NOT come to Durham.

I'm not comparing the behavior of the two groups while "on duty". I'm comparing it while "on leave".

My point is that the behavior of the Duke lacrosse players is far from unique among 20 year old males. The sailors in Norfolk have a bad habit of drinking and driving and killing themmselvers and taking out locals in the process. We locals could never take a girl to dinner and hit the men's room without coming back to the table and finding a half a dozen squids hitting on the date. And they wouldn't back off either. And you've apparently forgotten "Tailhook".

And you apparently do not seem to know that it takes a hell of a lot of discipline to be a national championship contender in a Div I NCAA sport AND graduate the entire class of seniors every year. I'd take any guy on that team compared to the average swabbie.

"I'm telling my kids, "head for the exits" if this kind of stuff gets started."

That's what Seligmann and Finnerty did. They saw the 'performance' for all of five minutes, and then left to get something to eat before going back to the dorms.

For that, of course, they deserve to be sent to prison for 30 years (and be attacked and probably done in while there)...

"Those that went to strip shows went to the night clubs where that activity went on"

From what I have read, one of the lacross captains hired strippers at the last minute (a tradition with many Duke frats and teams because underage team players can't enter strip clubs, which before the drinking age was raised to 21 used to be the site of an annual end of year party). Many, and probably most, teams and frats at Duke, including sororities, had strippers that year (and probably will this year, also).

One of the strippers was unable to perform being too drugged out; and the expected 2-hour show--for which they paid $800--was over in five minutes.

The second stripper then apparently asked--since her partner was on the floor--if any of the guys wanted to get up and dance with her. Nobody responded. Somebody asked if she had any sex toys, or she made some comment about the guys
being too small in the sexual department, and a joke was made then, 'use this'--a broomstick. It was a joke, and taken as such at the time.

But when strippers want to leave one gig and head for another where there is better money to be made, they often
claim to have been threatened or insulted; and the guys can't complain to the police afterward or demand their money back, because the strippers--being streetwise--know to file a complaint against them.

The photos show the guys generally sitting in chairs like they were attending a funeral. It was not a wild, raucus party. There were no racial epithets used (according to 40 witnesses) other than one remark evidently taken from a Chris Rock show about 'thank your granpa for my nice cotten shirt'--from a guy angry at being ripped off, and which was an attempt to be clever.

Believe me, any sub crew could have found themselves in the same mess, and then been pilloried in the same manner, if they had found themselves in the jurisdiction of DA Nifong.

And the Navy brass might have wanted to throw them under the bus just like the Duke Univ. admin, if there were issues of race and class invovld.

Thanks for the additional information. Regardless, the situation was completely inappropriate for college students. As far as us squids go, some I knew would have participated, but none did to my knowledge, if a similar situation presented itself. Neither this nor the fact that other people have done the same excuses it.

Your advice is spot on. No one that got up and left deserve any punishment. I don't think anyone but Nifong deserves prison here. Bet he walks. There are some that deserve expulsion, and...the Duke faculty has much to answer for as has been pointed out.
