Lots of $$$ involved. Holidays are big business. Even holidays with old historical origins are exploited. Take Valentine's Day - a minor no-account holiday promoted and exploited by florists, candy makers, jewelers, etc. A better name for it would be Mushy Money Day, a needless day where trinkets are extorted out of husbands and boyfriends by the fear that the significant woman will get sore.

Sweetest Day and Grandparent's Day come to mind for faux "holidays" as well.
