Hanging is NOT "barbaric" at all; I can think of many infinitely MORE barbaric ways to kill criminals...all of which have been practiced by civilized societies.

Like the fate of Wiliam Wallace, they drew out his intestines while he was still alive, then cut off his limbs one by one. They made him live through out the whole process.
