Though I do think there should be some kind of meet-in-the-middle such as - all climbers in the winter must wear GPS device when climing in case of an incident like this. Why? Not only so SAR can find you more quickly if/when you get lost/injured, but to save money & the time and effort of SAR to find you when you get lost.

GPS is a good idea. Following was my first response and I stick by it until something else comes up better.

Rather than any laws being passed not allowing such action how about a waiver for rescue or a declaration by family who will be responsible to pay for a rescue, or a rescue fee large enough to discourage this type of activity altogether. The fee would have to be paid prior to the excursion. If none has been paid then rescue is not at the public's expense. I think those folks in New York spent their own money for helicopters to search for their parents who were found off the road. I believe it is fair enough since they wanted that type of investigation. There are many other areas that could fit in this area also.

In addition to that post, I think of the sailboats and other boats that our Coast Guard have to save in storms because of stupidity. The list is endless.

Again, my bottom line is not to outlaw any of this as I would rather these so called Conservatives would just but out of everyone's life and agree that we all are at the trough for one thing or another and that includes smokers, aids, transfats, etc. But many here love that legislation.

I wasn't comparing mountain climbing to buggery. I was comparing the extreme risk of seeking this particular climb for thrills with the extreme risk of seeking homosexual sex with a known AIDS patient.

I thought you had more brain capacity than some of the others, but you're just as willing to deliberately miss the point so you can be part of the little buddy-buddy clique as the others are.

You compare anybody SMART enough to stay off a snow-covered mountain prone to avalanches and 140 mph winds bringing -30 white-out conditions in December with couch potatoes.

Brilliant.

Freud DID have a field day with people with a death-wish and a propensity for extremes that endanger others.

Guess it was considered too brutal a truth

Brutal maybe...but not a truth. Just an opinion...and a tasteless one at that. I thought you had the good sense to ask for it to be removed

No, I have the good sense to see that both activities are extremely dangerous and serve no purpose other than self-gratification. Again, I'm not speaking of mountain climbing generally but this climb in particular (and others like it not under discussion).

Enlighten those of us who are intellectually challenged as to what Siggie said on this subject. And how did these climbers endanger others?

And please provide a link to source. I hope the cocktail hour has arrived at your locale. Otherwise...

Oh. So it's argumentative to point out incorrect information?

Turn on some news. Those are extensive military assets up there and down below, not just private.

I think you just stepped in it by shooting your mouth off instead of taking a few seconds to see what the subject under discussion actually was. Instead of admitting that, you devolve to your only other refuge, the old ad hominem personal attack.

Lame.

No quantity of gin can substitute for experience. Sober up, get in shape and take a course in climbing.

I promise you'll appreciate the changes.

Now, sit back with your cocktail, relax and make yourself a nice little hors d' oeuvres tray of toasted CROW.

"Blah..blah..blah" ?

Sounds like you forgot to take your own tag line advice about not being stuck on stupid. Or maybe that was the most intelligent thing you could utter by this point.

So, you would rather have those military assets sitting on the ground, with no real world experience at all. Then, when they get deployed to rescue valuable US assets (soldiers) off a mountain top, in, oh, lets say AFGHANISTAN, they will not have a clue how to handle the situation.

I would rather my rescuers, doctors, etc. have real world, applicable experience.

And, as I have said before, there are many things we, as conservatives, can agree on as wasteful application of taxpayer dollars. This is not one of them.

My heart goes out to the families of these three men.

That said, if it is illegal to smoke in public places, or restaurants may be prohibited to serve trans fats, why not make it illegal to put not only yourself, but others, in such dangerous situations? So many people wanting to help, and to rescue the 3 men have risked their lives.

I guess I just don't understand. The experts seem to applaud these folks for their guts to push it to the limit. I see it as a waste of human lives, for some kind of self gratification, I guess. And that's sad for all involved.

Hey that crow is tasty. Unfortunately, I am personally familiar with death wish and Freud has been disproved in most theories. Did you know that Freud had no theory of bi-polar disorder (I have personal experience with this malady...is this one like buggery also)?

Curious tho why you think climbing is an extension of "death wish?"

BTW, what experience do you have with athletic programs? Is there a connection with, say, "death wish syndrome."

Or are you speaking from the ole couch?

Experience enhances even the lamest of theories. Tell us of your lame but enhanced theories.

For the Nth time, I have never said we shouldn't be using these assets for this mission. I'm GLAD we are. Can some of you just not read???????

What I said is that the poster who said the entire rescue mission is being done by volunteers and there is no public cost is wrong. That was the entire sum of my point. The rescue mission does indeed cost public money - military and sheriffs are taxpayer funded.

Well she certainly seems to have a death-wish on FR. Wonder how long our little psycho-analyst will last?

I see it as a waste of human lives, for some kind of self gratification, I guess.

You guess? Go put your ample fanny back on the couch. Say no to Lewis and Clark, Colombus, Lance Armstrong, Edmund Hillary, and these poor self-gratified guys.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion. If only it were as ample as you know what.

You should have seen her comment that the admin mods had the good sense to pull. She compared climbers to buggers...compared climbing to the spread of aids.

If she is around for long, the old freepers will be jumping ship like proverbial rats.

I'm telling you...If I were a few years younger, I'd learn to climb. The pictures are some of the most extraordinary I've ever seen, and I love mountains.
