WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 Newt Gingrich is not running for president, at least not yet. He has set his sights much higher.
Mr. Gingrichs mission, as he sees it, is to save American civilization from the gravest crisis it has confronted since the Civil War. He has also set as a goal what he calls the restoration of God to a central place in American government and culture.
If, as a result of these endeavors, the American people should choose Mr. Gingrich to be their leader, he suggests, so be it. But, for the time being, he says he is not actively seeking the presidency, though he often appears to be.
Mr. Gingrich, 63, the speaker of the House from 1995 to 1998, now disdains mere politics as a distraction from what he characterizes as mortal challenges facing the United States. Prospective presidential candidates of both parties are wasting time and money at this stage of the election cycle hiring staffs, mapping strategy and courting voters, he said. Instead of doing the things typical presidential candidates are doing, Mr. Gingrichs focus is elsewhere.
Taken together, the challenges we face are greater than any since 1861, Mr. Gingrich said in an interview Friday in his Washington office. No party, no movement has a grip on the scale of the changes we need to make to survive as a civilization. The most important slogan for the next quarter-century is Real change requires real change.

It's completely different: They hung with him AFTER he was out of power. Newt legitimizes HRC to some before she attempts to take the White House.
This is why I would vote for Newt. This is precisely what is needed in this country. Neither Rudy nor McCain will become the President of a nation that does not exist or that is splintered by civil war.
Nancee
Just becasue he isnt in the white house dosen't mean he don't have power. He has plenty of it and also how do you know it won't effect the chances of her winning? Some voters might get upset when they see the leader of the Republican Party haning around Slick that's not too say that Newt is in the right there both wrong.
I'd feel better if I knew exactly 'which' God he believes and refers to. It turns my stomach when I hear the President say that Islam is a 'peaceful' religion and that we are all following the 'same' God, just in different ways.
It's the name Jesus Christ that offends and He is the one on whom this nations history was founded. Any Pres that has the faith to 'offend' the world by proclaiming the name of Christ has my vote.
When did I suggest otherwise? When I said he could be a powerbroker if he DIDN'T waste his time running?
He has plenty of it and also how do you know it won't effect the chances of her winning?
What?
Some voters might get upset when they see the leader of the Republican Party haning around Slick that's not too say that Newt is in the right there both wrong.
WHat grade are you in?
Know the enemy
I was thinking of him working with the party on a national level, where he could be plenty influential on those Congressional primaries in terms of focus and candidate drafting. I was thinking of his broad knowledge of the nation, and his contacts across the country. So I have to disagree with you on the ineffectuality of such an approach; that's what the national party is SUPPOSED to be doing.
Bravo, Bravo
He doesn't have elected power--he's a media figure, which he would be with or without the Bushes being polite. That's meaningless compared to Newt's helping make HRC look moderate so she achieves REAL, POLITICAL power. You don't get the significance of that huge difference?
A stealth candidate.
Has he had some sort of epiphany?
Isn't this the guy who's been divorced twice and married 3 times?
The guy who left his 2nd wife after she was diagnosed with MS and then asked for an annulment of their 19 year marriage?
And he's talking about restoring God to a central place in American culture?
Here's a link to the annulment story as discussed here on FR years ago.

Carolyn
You have me beat
I'd vote for Gingrich in a nanosecond.
We don't need pretty boys and pretty girls running for president. Not in this upcoming cycle. We need a sharp, articulate guy who understands the Big picture and can define it to the average American in a way he/she understands. There is NOBODY, in either party, that can do that better than Newt Gingrich.
And for you Newt haters - get a friggin life.
He that is without sin amoung you let him first cast a stone.
What you fail to acknowledge is that the "Newt haters" in this country far exceed the Newt lovers.
Like it or not, Newt's got similar polarizing, unlikeable characteristics as Mrs. Clinton. He, however, would not have the MSM helping him overcome them.
I think he's smart not to run.
Well someone has to be happy lol
