James Baker's New Test In Diplomacy [Bush Spokesman: "Jim Baker can go back to his day job."]
CBS ^ | December 6, 2006

~snip~

Back in 1990, Baker convinced Syria to join the Gulf War coalition against Saddam Hussein. Now, he wants this George Bush to talk to Syria ... and Iran, too.

"It has to be hard-nosed, it has to be determined," Baker said in a television interview in October. "You don't give away anything, but in my view, it's not appeasement to talk to your enemies."

But this president may not be in much of a hurry to accept Baker's ideas about that — or much else. Asked if Baker would help implement the report, a spokesman for Mr. Bush said, "Jim Baker can go back to his day job."

Johnnie, McCain is mad because they didn't recommend more troops. That is the ONLY reason he's mad.

he now requires everyone in his state to buy insurance

We have the same requirement in Calif., except it's for auto.

Lee Hamilton again! When did this obscure former Congressman become the statesman of our times?

the terrifying, cold as death reality which should leave thinking people trembling with fear is that

Lee Hamilton is very best "statesman" that Demonicrats were able to come up with...

I'm not a big McCain fan, but to give him his due, he's been very solid on the wot. In fact I'm willing to bet that the country would rally behind him more than they mostly don't for Dubya. Defeating the I-F's is the most important challenge our country faces in the decades ahead. All other issues are secondary. McCain, for all his faults, seems willing to accept that challenge.I'm coming to this view. Although I do see the unlimited Mexican migration as eventually creating the same type of conditions here that the French have created with the massive immigration of Moslems. So to go to Iraq and fight the WOT while at the same time ignoring the Mexinvasion makes little sense. 9/11 was a terrible atrocity. But I bet more than 3000 people a year are killed by illegals through either drunk driving, murder, mahem or gang related killings. So it's not an either/or, but two critical problems, both of which I'd like to see addressed.

Duncan Hunter link above in thread for another announced alternative.

On the horror show side: Richardson announced on Fox News that his is running. Now we can have a chi-com collaborater, racist, icompetent "latino" as POTUS. Yeah!

".....on the House of Saud payroll."

That's the problem with most of the people at State. They're all looking to go on the Saudi payroll after retirement.

Well his number 2 on the commission demanded that the entire report be put into practice.... this from people who never even bothered to go up and talk to the Kurds and only Chuck Robb ever left the Green Zone; not to mention what a retired SCOTUS (Sandra Day O'Conner) and a Clinton Pimp (Vernon Jordon) know about evaluating a war????

I hope none of the suggestions in the report had Ed Meese's signature on them, but the fact that he was chosen (presumably by Baker) to be on the commission in the first place isn't a good sign.

I think the whole committee reeks... we didn't elect these people to represent us, most are internationalists or worse, Arabists, and James Baker certainly didn't do anything to improve the attitudes at Foggy Bottom when he was Sec of State.

I have a cold, so am shorter tempered than normal, but I'm really sick of people thinking we should always roll over and make concessions, or make nice with people who hate us at the expense of our friends.

IMO we need to unleash our military, pure and simple, get rid of Sadr and his militia, declare martial law if necessary and kick some Iranian and Syrian butts out of the country.

If one more congress critter asks for a committee, I'm going to scream. That is what we pay our congressmen and senators to do themselves, not by proxy from people who then DEMAND we institute their demands.

Arabists, transnationalists, anti-Semites, elitists .....quite a group there.

Yep, the biggest mistake in Iraq was the obsession with "winning hearts and minds" (that can never be won) which resulted in a series of non-actions (like letting Sadr and his gang of thugs live) which of course served only to encourage the enemy. That enemy only comprehends military power ruthlessly employed, and it's long past time we employ it. ....specifically, on Iran and Syria. No national-building, policing, and social engineering nonsense either.

Way to piss off EVERYONE on the Right yet again John McCain!

John McCain hates this report for all the same reasons most FReepers hate it. He didn't exactly call it stupid, but he may as well have.

The only way to implement the ISG recommendations is to throw it in the trash.

Lee Hamilton has always been a liberal. Who appointed him to this group? And why, after the disasterous 911 Commission? Certainly would not call him a statesman.

Grandpa thought John Birchers were lefties.

Ha! I still have my grandpop's 1959 edition of 'The Blue Book of the John Birch Society'. It is, especially in 2006, an absolutely amazing read. Jaw dropping.
