Detente and Salt 1 agreed to a parity of nuclear arsenals between the USA and the USSR. It also allowed the deployment of 2 ABM sites for each nation and for the US to deploy MIRV warheads.
This stalemate was accepted as part of the MAD doctrine and did not weaken the US.

Part of this treaty included Most Favored Nation status for the USSR and allowed the unrestricted emigration of Russian Jewry (the Brain Drain) to the west.

This was a brilliant move by the Nixon Kissenger team as the US was suffering huge deficits in Vietam and was experiencing 6% unemployment. The relaxation of tensions between the 2 superpowers allowed the US to undermine Soviet spheres of influence globally and showed the USSR and China that we had won the Peace race with our unmatched consumerism. The selling of Coca-Cola in Beiging, Moscow and Warsaw also helped win the cold war

But I understand- You don't like Nixon.

Reagan sure didn't see DETENTE that way

And I notice you don't comment on Kissinger's statement

And Nixon blew the Vietnam war big time . He could have cranked the B52s up in Jan 69 like he did in 72 and saved a lot of lives
