A few random thoughts on this:

Wouldn't it be dangerous for our own planes if terrorists on the ground had this kind of weapon?

Laser weapons for attacking ground targets are fine, but what we really need is a laser weapon that can knock out mortar rounds before they hit the ground.

To take advantage of a weapon like this, you need to have valuable ground targets to hit. It seems to me that terrorists offer few good ground targets, unless you are in the mood to take out every mosque in Iraq. But then, you could use cruise missiles for that.

Anyway, progress is good, go get 'em scientists!

I wonder how a directed energy weapon would be more effective against a target - hard or soft - than a chain gun? Less splatter?

A heavy lift helicopter would be better, yes? Esp if it was heavily armored, am working on just such a concept right now.

They will get them just like they now have access to GPS, heavy encryption, and communications that were unavailable 20 years ago. We just need to develop it first, identify countermeasures and hope it takes a long time for potential adversaries to get usable weapons.

I agree with you on the mortar/rpg shield. That's worth throwing a lot of money at!

Even better would be a UAV that could loiter above AA systems and kill at will. They wouldn't hear it coming, much less see it.

Is nice gunship, at night. During the daytime it is a big, fat, slow moving target.

We hear they are working on invisible aircraft surfaces, even a report awhile ago about an invisible harrier jet. The guy couldn't see it, even in broad daylight, but could sure HEAR it. Be as it may, these LAB wonders are all very fine, but 5-10-15 years to deployment doesn't cut it, they are needed NOW over there, not "someday".

"I want one."

It would be great for the commute home.

The people going 55 in the fast lane, would learn the meaning of "lead, follow or get out of the way"

Can't wait for Firestorm to be opperation at full capacity. If you haven't seen it, google it. They're out of Austrailia. But only do it if you like "chain-gun" like weaponry. :o)
