I really wonder how much of our problems in Iraq were from a lack of knowledge of this material in the military...

I'm putting my money here:

I don't disagree with that. But at an operational level, I think that manifested itself in our occupation in Iraq, with our being way too gentle. And that occurred due to some group in our government, and I'm thinking State/Powell/Bremer.

We needed to be a velvet-gloved iron fist.
