I've definitely been to chapels that do not, and I have also been to churches built in the round.

But of the four parishes that I've attended regularly in my life, all four have faced east.

Ha, I thought you were looking WAY ahead to next season, seeing how they're basically done for this year.

>Pope hailed for praying toward Mecca ...

No, the Pope wasn't
facing toward Mecca! The truth
is that he looked up

and saw a big cloud
shaped like the Virgin Mary
and he was praying

to the magic cloud!
I swear, the press just can not
get anything right!

"Istanbul Grand Mufti Mustafa Cagrici, who prayed with him there, said Benedict had faced Mecca and stood like Muslims do when they pray aright. "These were very nice gestures," he told NTV television."

Well, if the "grand mufti" said it, then it must be true.

Now back to reality. In order for the Pope to "pray towards Mecca" from Turkey, he must face Jerusalem too, and Jerusalem is closer to Turkey than Saudi Arabia. Traditionally, the Catholic Church in the West always built its Tabernacle and altar railings facing east, TOWARDS JERUSALEM. This was done so the priest and the congregation could face towards the Holy City where Christ was crucified, died and was Resurrected. This Pope is no fool, he is an incredibly brave soul to walk into the teeth of the devil and pray to Christ for the conversion of islam.

Furthermore, as the "grand mufti" stated, the Pope did not bow to Mecca, he was standing. If the Pope was standing when praying, it is very misleading to claim he was doing as the "muslims do when praying aright", for muslims pray with their faces in the dirt. Masses, (and Protestant 'services'), have the priest, (or minister) standing during the liturgy and leading the congregation in prayer, it has always been like this. And for Catholic priests it has always been that they face towards Jerusalem when praying. When you look at a map of the middle east you will discover that the Pope was indeed facing towards Jerusalem, with Mecca in the same direction but far beyond.

This incredibly brave pope was standing in the pit of Hell and immitating our Blessed Lord Jesus. For Jesus too descended into Hell to take saved souls up to Heaven; and I am certain that the Pope was praying to Christ for the conversion of islam.

It is just far too easy for the ignorant to condemn the Catholic Church and her Popes; they simply do not know their Christian history and roots, their Christian traditions. The Pope will never defend himself against his detractors and be put "on the spot", he will let those who are ignorant come to find the truth. But I hope this little post will clear things up a bit for those who became fearful at what this unbelievably misleading article said.

(3) Mecca and Jerusalem are in almost the exact same direction from Constantinople if you look at a map.

Yup. [jpeg]

Right now, I can think of only one Catholic church around me that faces east. It is the cathedral I mentioned in my earlier post. Most of the churches around here I've been in are on east-west streets, so they usually face north or south.

I believe the Pope strengthened Christianity and made a splendid example.

Indeed. Especially when you consider how muslims responded to him!

Catholics, when praying in Church, also face east. This is much ado about nothing.

Now if he kisses the Koran on the other hand....

If this Pope makes gestures like this, just think what the next one will do.

"It would have been rude for the Pope to face any other direction."

The Pope was praying towards Jerusalem and the muslims took advantage and mislead people by ommitting the fact that between the Pope and Mecca lies Jerusalem. Check out a map of the middle eas and you'll see what I'm saying is a fact.

"Of course, I'm reasonably sure that the Pope's gestures were exercises in politics and plain old schmoozing."

To some degree, yes. But as I pointed out in a few other posts, lying smack between the Pope and Mecca was............Jerusalem. The Pope was facing Jerusalem, the Holy City. The 'grand mufti' seems to have lost his sense of direction, or was just plain lying, as muslims are allowed to do if it "pleases allah".

You mean like this?

"In my present church I face south, the one before that south, the one before that south, the cathedral downtown east, the chapel at my kids' high school west, the basilica at Notre Dame north."

Traditionally, the Catholic Church in the West always built her Churches with the Tabernacle and altar facing towards Jerusalem, the Holy City. This tradition dates back to early Christianity. In our more "modern" era, the newer Churches don't always face east anymore, which is unfortunate. But if you look at a map of the middle east, you will see that the Pope was facing Jerusalem, which stands directly between where the Pope was and mecca.

Simply not true. In a Catholic Church, you pray facing the altar, just like in 99% of other churches, and the altar may be N, S, E, or W. It really doesn't matter.

Where did you hear this nonsense?

Actually it's duffuses like you who can't get anything right. Take a look at map genius, and you'll see that the Pope was indeed facing Jerusalem, the Holy City.
