Time to Raise Taxes?
Robert Rubin, Treasury secretary under President Clinton, recently told the Washington Economic Club that "you cannot solve this nation's fiscal problems without increased revenue." Oh, and in case you think that Rubin, a noted deficit hawk, might have been talking about imaginative ways to accelerate the economy–thus raking in more tax revenue–that's not quite what he had in mind. "I think if you were to increase taxes right now, you would have probably about zero negative effect on the economy," Rubin said in response to a question from the high-powered audience. Rubin didn't specify which taxes he was talking about, such as income taxes or capital-gains taxes or dividend taxes.
But raising taxes at this moment would be interesting timing. Each day, more and more economists are cutting their growth forecasts for the economy. And today's weaker-than-expected durable-goods reports–new orders plunged 8.3 percent last month–sure gave more ammo to the economic bears out there. Then there's the sharp drop in the U.S. dollar. A continued decline could be inflationary–by raising prices for imported goods–forcing the Fed to raise interest rates. The beleaguered housing industry would surely love that. And then throw a tax hike into the mix. Certainly a fascinating fiscal policy experiment, one that smells a bit like stagflation, right?

I keep hoping someday one of these tax lovers will suggest a "tea tax".Based on American history it seems to be the only tax ever imposed that got Americans angry enough to overthrow a corrupt government !!!

It's the best way to get government spending under control.
"The people" think they're getting something for nothing while the government borrows to fill the gap. Increasing taxes are the only way to get people thinking about excessive government spending.
A few pinpoint sorties by F-16 and F-18's, and the insurgents might think twice about any 'gatherings'. By making instant millionares out of a thousand 'spotters', you could put a big dent in the resistance. Now, mulitply that by the amount currently being spent......this 'war' is done in a month.

Sounds good to me. A low flat rate from the first dollar of income with NO exemptions, deductions, or credits would be the most efficient. When you start kicking low-income people off the tax rolls you create a natural constituency for higher spending and higher tax rates because such people's taxes are not affected as they don't pay any. That is why Republican tax reforms, even Reagan's, always wind up being ultimately self-defeating because they always include provisions for more and more lower-income people being freed from the tax obligation altogether as a tactic to gain the approval of some Congressional Democrats.

I was so hoping for a big, BIG Tax increase.
Doncha know that will stimulate job growth and promote commerce and industry. Lower interest rates and of course it will mean a better life and more spending cash for all.

Just think, 100% taxes, we get free everything, then, the workforce can collectively quit en mass, why not, everything is free, Free, FREE! Why work? We still can expect free everything for life and the gov will just have to rely on the UN to continue our way of life. I'm ready, are you? It'll be pure Utopia!

The scenario I see will look something like this.
The Dems will raise taxes, the economy will tank, the MSM will blame it on Bush fiscal policies, and the Dems will be held out as the only people who can save the country from economic ruin.
All this just in time for the 2008 elections.
The Klintoon regime actually proposed a scheme where they were going to tax ALL earnings above a certain amount at 100% believing that people would keep working beyond the point where they were handing all earnings to the Gov't. Hard to believe these FOOLS have any credibility at all.
