ANDERSON, Mo.---- At least 10 people were killed in a fire early Monday at a state-run group home for the mentally disabled in southwest Missouri, the state fire marshal said.
At least 12 people were taken to hospitals from the Anderson Guest House south of Joplin, Fire Marshal Randy Cole said. Authorities believe about 35 people were in the home at the time, he said.
The building was ''very heavily damaged'' before the fire was brought under control just before daylight, Cole said.
The cause was under investigation, and names of the victims had not been released.
The home is run by the Missouri Mental Health Department and Department of Health and Senior Services, he said. Health and Senior Services said they did not immediately have any information on the fire, and the mental health department did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Just up the road from me-tragic...
just saw this on the news- wow- sad sad event. Another event that was unbeleivbabvle was the older fokls being left to die in homes and hospitsals in New orleans. Seems older folks, who have endured years of hardships, are the first ones to be left behind. Not saying htis happened in the fire incident- Just hate seeing stories like this! http://sacredscoop.com
Dreadful. May these poor souls rest in peace.
How terrible! Since it was run by our 'fine' state we are likely to hear very little about it. Hopefully there are lots of family members of the victims that will press for answers.
And this from a Chicago paper!
You would think that the Missouri State Auditor would of discovered beforehand that the place was unsafe.
Oh wait the Auditor was Claire McClaskell who didn't do much of a job but still got promoted to US Senator.
Ah, yes. Sweet Claire the Innocent. Stashed her cash in Bermuda, dodged the condo tax collector at Lake of the Ozarks, former wife of a dead doper, now married to an oldfolks home magnate, pure at the driven snow.
Deinstitutionalization.....
