Rangel's mission is not to reinstate the draft (he knows full well that isn't going to happen), it's to attempt make the far-left nutballs in his party's leadership positions look reasonable by comparison.

Actually, Rangel's plan is to engender a wider base of opposition to the war against terrorism by making more people susceptible to serving. He believes that if more people are at risk of being forced into serving, then there will be a real outcry against the war as opposed to the support for this war demonstrated by an all volunteer military.

With that many people working for the Government, I would think the path to Empire would be quite quick. All that manpower and bureaucracy has to go somewhere and I doubt it will be sweeping your streets.

All of this is soooo ironic. My NY friends with teenagers have been paranoid that Bush will reinstate the draft despite my best efforts to tell them he would never do such a thing.

Now one of their own has come back and bit them on the ankle! The awful, abrasive-voiced Charlie Rangel!
