I'm 1/2 black and I won't dare to use the term.
>>In my previous post, I said that I am not advocating banning the n-word.<<
I read that post after the one I replied to - I apologize.
The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. You, my FRiend, are the step. I know that it can seem like trying to hold back the tide with a teacup, but I would answer their question with this: "And, just how, exactly, do ""WE"" use that word? How would you know that? And how is YOUR use of it any different? It is an offensive epithet regardless who utters it." Now you've opened the door to expose their own racial prejudices.
(Send'em to their Funk & Wagnalls to look up "epithet". It ought to keep them busy for a couple of minutes, at least!)
So, what socially acceptable term can we use to identify the black miscreants formerly called "n-words"? They are still out there and need a simple identifiable label. Orwell was right, language control is political control.
Here's some rap for you:

"has been used to degrade and imply that black people are inferior."
I grew up hearing the word and never heard it said to degrade or imply inferiority. It described a race of people, a skin color....
Polite society said colored people. I was grown before I heard it as an expletive.
Me?I never use the word period,in any of its forms.I think destructive language degenerates the whole social contract.I was merely stating the reality around me.It is not an endorsement of that reality.
Oh,for sure.I often DO my little routine with the black kids.Goes something like this:
"WHAT did you say, brother? You thinks thats COOL?Cool to degrade yourself and other black folks?Man,do you know that white folks are laughing at Y'all behind your backs?Check your history,my man. That word Y'all use so much is what white folks used while they were hanging you from trees back in the day.You feel me?...Look at me in the eye when I'm talking to you, son. You think I'm PLAYING with you?You think what being a black man is about is some clown or some foul mouthed thug?Wake up,brother. Its all about saving your life"
When I get through with my little spiel,I get those"Man,that white boy is crazy"And thats OK too cause I AM a little crazy.Got to be to work in the hood nowadays!
Yet I do not have unlimited energy. There are times when I hear and see all the madness around me and all I can do is just let out a great big sigh and go home and munch on some carob chips.
Ya feel me?
Riverman, still crazy after all these years.
I feel ya, Riverman. And, I know that going against the tide can wear you down. I was also a substitute teacher. Most of the time, I didn't make any difference to the kids in my classroom, but there were bright spots when I got through to a kid and forced him/her to think. Those were the days that made getting out of bed on all the other days worthwhile.
I know you don't have it easy, but I'm right there with ya, brother. Keep up the good fight and don't let them get ya down, ok?
"Come on! People know the the n-word has been used in the past and the present to degrade black people and make them feel inferior."
Of course people know. You missed my point. If you go back and re-read my post, you will see what timeframe I was referring to.
I call for a ban on race-whores like Jackson, Sharpton, et al.
Good idea, and apply the same penalty to all regardless of their "race".
I hope Mel Brooks wasn't planning on making a remake of his classic film Blazing Saddles. The movie wouldn't be the same with out that word.
Why does there need to be a term for black miscreants? Bad people are bad people regardless of races, there should be a special term for black, white, or Latino miscreants?
I feel sorry for anyone who feels that that can't express themselves without being able to use expletives or racial slurs. They need a better vocabulary.
