Let's see, in the course of their schooling, my kids have had the teacher who said that the dark meat on chicken is dark because "it's closer to the bone". Then there's the ones that spend half the class time talking about their pets and whatnot, and the one who had 11th grade math students sewing fake moles because it's Mole Day. And let's not forget the many that think watching popular movies is an effective use of class time. Professionals my eye.

And then there's the classic Bush Bashing Rant which probably takes up a significant amount of class time.

9TH grade in the public schools-
I had 2 classes taught by coaches. One was world history. The coach would show up 15 mintues late EVERY DAY, would B.S. for another 20-30 minutes, might answer some questions, then would give a reading assignment and leave again. He was black and had several black girls who were his favorites and he would have them create the test weekly (NO LIE). Needless to say, ALL the blacks in that class scored 100 on EVERY test!

The other class taught by a coach was science. He was white. He too would show up late daily. 3 days a week, we were treated to a film, usually about sports. I don't recall EVER having a test in that class! I had an A in the class and don't think I ever opened my book. I don't think I even brought my book to class. A friend and I usually read trashy romance novels during that class or did homework for other classes.

When I was in the second grade my Sunday-school teacher was also a fifth-grade schoolteacher. One of the other Sunday-school students asked her what a word meant and she didn't know. I attempted to tell her that the word was explained in the footnote. The teacher didn't know what a footnote was. My Mother was in college at the time and had explained about footnotes while she was typing her papers.

Another anecdote about the dedication of teachers: my sister's eleventh grade English teacher told the whole class that he was only there to avoid the draft. He was still teaching earlier this year.

My mother became a schoolteacher at the same time that I completed high school. She later earned her M.Ed. She often revealed her frustrations with the social engineering and bureaucratic machinations behind every action she was allowed to perform or forced to perpetrate.
