Some candidates took voters (& the majority) for granted.
In at least one race a candidate needed the boot (chaffee)
Then there were the stumbles
And the dirty little secrets coming out just in time for elections...

Tell that to Jim Talent, who ran out of money in the last days of his campaign. Maybe some of that loot and effort squandered on Chafee (who admitted he would have pulled a Jeffords and switched if re-elected) might have saved Talent's seat and our senate majority.

Given the new leadership at NRCC and NRSC recently, I think the GOP congresscritters figured it out already even if some FReepers haven't.
