GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR NAMED 2006 PUBLIC OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR
(Jackson, Mississippi) - Governor Haley Barbour has been named the nations most outstanding governor and a 2006 Public Official of the Year in recognition of his resourcefulness and cool-headed leadership in the face of Hurricane Katrina.
The award was given by Governing magazine, an independent, Washington, D.C.-based magazine devoted to coverage of state and local government. Governor Barbour will accept the award tonight at a dinner in Washington.
I am honored to receive this award from Governing magazine, but Marsha and I feel it is more a tribute to the people of Mississippi because of the character, resilience, courage and selflessness they displayed after Hurricane Katrina, Governor Barbour said. I graciously accept this award on their behalf.
Governor Barbour is profiled in the November issue of Governing for being straight with the facts about the utter devastation in the area, but also for his own demeanor in public appearances that suggested the state would summon the will to rebuild. The profile, titled Steady in a Storm, credits Governor Barbour for putting his state on a road to recovery, as evidenced by the prompt reopening of public schools and the unprecedented provision of temporary housing for more than 100,000 residents.
It was because of Governor Barbours amazing leadership that he has shown in managing the State of Mississippi after we suffered the largest natural disaster in this nations history that compelled me to nominate him for this award, state Auditor Phil Bryant said. No public official in America deserved this prestigious award more than our Governor, Haley Barbour."
The article also highlights Governor Barbours erasing of a $700 million-plus budget deficit without raising taxes, his increase of state spending on K-12 and higher education, boosting job training and economic development programs, and his successful promotion of broad policy changes, including a tort reform measure that has been hailed as one of the most successful in the nation.
This years group of nine recipients of Public Official of the Year 2006 awards represents the thirteenth to be honored in Governings annual awards program, which was launched in 1994.
Good for you.
Call people, call!!!! This country CANNOT be turned over to the likes of RINOs and GOD FORBID.... Hitlery!
Does anyone think the announcement of being named "2006 Public Official of the Year" was coincindental in the timing of McCain and Giuliani entering the Presidential race? I think this was an opening salvo by Barbour to let people know who he is and that he has been an effective leader.
This was a press release that I got off of his website. Not a big story off of AP, ect. Not sure it is getting national attn., so not sure if your theory is exactly right.
He knows the political system all to well and will spend his time and money with prudent conservation.
But then again as you point correctly, perhaps he has no interest and you can't blame anyone for that.
VERY good prez caliber.
With Newt? Like eating fine chocolate, smoking a fine cigar and sipping Lagvulin.
That is far as my wife lets me go.
:~)
While I love Newt, his "baggage" is heavy. The great thing about Barbour is that he has kept his nose clean and has been married to the same woman for 33 years.
He's good on vis-a-visAbortion.
Anyone know what his Second Amendment position is?
How about his stance re illegal aliens?
Carter and Clinton and Bush. All southern governers.
I love your tagline!
I agree. Haley Barbour is number 1 on my list for POS.
This ought to answer his stance on the 2nd Amendment.
Governor Barbour Signs Castle Doctrine, Other NRA-Backed Gun Provisions Into Law!
Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour has signed two of the National Rifle Associations (NRA) priority bills into law; SB 2426, the "Castle Doctrine" self-defense bill, and HB 1141, one bill containing two primary pro-gun and one pro-hunting provision for law-abiding gun owners and hunters in the state.
"I'd like to thank Governor Barbour for signing these bills and making them the law of the land in Mississippi," said Chris W. Cox, NRA's chief lobbyist. "Both are important pieces of legislation that will help preserve our fundamental right to self-defense as well as the gun rights and hunting heritage for Mississippians for generations to come."
SB 2426 states that if a criminal breaks into your home, your occupied vehicle or your place of business, you may presume he is there to do bodily harm and may therefore use any force necessary against him.
Mississippi courts have consistently recognized the "stand your ground" principle - both inside and outside the home - since the late 1800s. SB 2426 would codify such court precedent into law.
Furthermore, the Castle Doctrine law provides protection from criminal prosecution and civil litigation for those who defend themselves from criminal attack.
HB 1141 enables hunters to continue hunting on certain-sized land tracts annexed by a city or county, even if that locality bans the discharge of firearms within its limits; prohibits the seizure and confiscation of firearms by local officials in the unfortunate event of a future natural disaster in Mississippi; and permits employees to transport and store firearms in their locked, private vehicles while parked on their employer's property if the employer does not provide secure parking separate from the public.
"On behalf of all NRA members in Mississippi, I want to thank HB 1141s author, Rep. Warner McBride (D-Courtland) and Sen. Charlie Ross (R-Brandon) for their efforts in guiding this measure from concept to law," concluded Cox. "I'd also like to thank Sen. Ross and Sen. Ralph Doxey (R-Holly Springs) for sponsoring the Castle Doctrine bill, as well as the leadership in the Mississippi House of Representatives for keeping both bills on track for passage."
Really drive 'em zonkers....Barbour/Lynne Cheney 08
"...but who wants to live in Mississippi?!"
Remember, pre-Katrina, when there were rumors about Barbour running for presdient....
He denied it then, and the response here on FR was basically "who said he was?"
Mississippi is the best governed state in the country.
Don't let anyone take him away from you.
Now to find where he stands re illegal immigration...
Barbour is easily the best Governor MS has had during my lifetime. (Of course, my lifetime has been pock-marked by such "lumniaries" as Cliff Finch and FOB Ray Mabus).
Haley Barbour for President 2008.
