I wouldn't say that the Democrat take-over was a Republican plot. Karl Rove is not omnipotent (...Dick Cheney... I'm not so sure...). We got our butts kicked, and we should not deny that simple fact.
But we should be looking for ways to prosper in the current environment. This article, flawed as it is in premise, points the way.

Except for running GHWB. That's a little wacky, even by prevailing standards. I was all for running GWHB is 1996, but he's getting a wee bit long in the tooth, these days.

We got our butts kicked, and we should not deny that simple fact. If "WE" means republicans, okay. If "WE" means conservatives, I might not agree with you. Many of the democrats that were elected were more conservative than the republicans they were running against. For example, just today, Murtha was thrown to the curb.
