...the next step would have been to launder the money and he would have been home free.

If he had "laundered" the money first, he wouldn't be in this mess........

Yes, in that the government had no other reason to search him except for the amount of cash (if it hadn't been for that doggie sniff)........

IOW, you're suggesting that: if he hadn't given them several admissible-in-court clues, and the fellow hadn't lied to them, and the dogs hadn't sniffed illegal drugs on him, the cops wouldn't have had any probable cause....

He's just a simple Nigerian, living up to the promises of his recent e-mail campaign.

A+.

Some of you have missed this part: "arrived in Detroit from Nigeria".

He was going through US customs. It is illegal to bring in more than US$10,000 and not declare it to a US customs official. I believe amounts over $10,000 are dutiable/taxable and that is why it must be delcared. That is what they got him on.

IIRC, you also have to declare if you are taking more than $10,000 in currency OUT of the country as well.

Money itself has an odor, a distinct smell (cue Monty Python's "Money"). The dog can be trained to alert on merely money, and the human handlers later claim it was the smell of narcotics. They can jack anyone up for carrying detectable amounts of money using narcotics as an excuse.

This perp's troubles started when he lied about how much cash he had. Had he declared it, they'd have to let him go.

He can't be prosecuted for the information he was carrying- if none of it is classified, you can have any information you want. It's included in the article to help justify searching him in the first place.

If I got caught with money, a manual on electroplating, instructions for installing electroplated cyclone fences, and advice on cracking rocks in fence post holes, the article would mention cyanide, information on perimeter security devices used at military bases, and explosives.

Dang! Why did they stop him?

He was the Nigerian who promised to bring my millions.

Now I'll have to send another couple of thousand for transportation and handling.

Isn't Nigeria the place where Joe Wilson didn't buy any yellow-cake to send to Saddam??

Niger actually.  Saddam was there to get a dependable supply of cow-peas.  That's what Joe told me anyways...

Actually, cocaine is pretty much on all money. It becomes like the metal strip in bills. If you have enough bills, there will be a lot of metal for detectors. Likewise, if you have a lot of bills, there will be a lot of cocaine for a dog to detect.

I swear it is almost as though the government put it there on purpose.

It's none of the Government's business how much money I carry, in or out or around the country..............

Such privacy may be nice, but it just isn't the case in practice. Just as how much money you make is known by the govt, or what is in your luggage while flying on a plane, or what kind of food products you are carrying in from overseas. As a point of fact, Customs does require such a declaration at your point of entry. Check out line 13 on the sample customs declaration at;

Well I wonder what he was going to do...

I have a feeling that the dry runs on how to smuggle cash, a huge amount of computer files (in a hard disk or laptop), etc. already started. Terrorists maybe testing the waters for how to and who is able to get a pass. (eg., testing how our PC will get us killed by not challenging minorities)

These are the type of things used in organizing terrorist cells, bribing the weak, upgrading terrorists on technology (how to), etc......

Time and vigilance will tell in preventing a strike, hopefully. I pray I'm wrong. Nancee, thanks for the ping. It's coffee time. I'll get back to you in a while.

US law requires the declaration of more than $10K in cash or negotiables. You can have it, but you must declare it on an official Customs form. Nothing Unconstitutional about. It has been tested in the Federal courts many times for the last twenty five or thirty years and upheld.

It seems to me that when we fly we agree to endure the security procedures including searches. If you refuse to be searched, do not fly.

How about the issue is not concealing the currency, but having a laptop with nuclear information on it?

I'm a bit perplexed about the number of comments on the money and the few picking up on the other things in his possession.

He was coming into the country.

I guess the law works going in or out. From the article:

He is charged with concealing more than $10,000 in his luggage, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
