"These people are poor and they were tricked by people more intelligent than us," he said. "They took one of our 75-year-old ladies, put huge silicone breasts on her and said she was 47. Another man they filmed to look like the poorest person in the world, and one of our men who is missing an arm had a plastic sex toy taped to his stump."
"We are suing because they were not truthful," added Staicu, who said he saw parts of "Borat" and was disgusted.
"They did not film reality," he said. "We've really had enough of this."
Neither Cohen's agent in London nor 20th Century Fox's offices in Los Angeles immediately returned phone messages Tuesday from The Associated Press.

The man...err...boy is not funny at all. Just a dumb mf'er if you ask me.
No...but I would. This is the reason my parents taught me not to get extra drunk!
>>>Not really that funny... Exploiting these poor people like this is disgusting. Guess thats what "comedians" and "actors" think is funny. Borat got his arse kicked in NYC now I think thats funny.>>>
I really tend to agree with you. If he told these people he was from their neighboring country and claimed to be making a documentary and it was really a commercial movie... Yeah, I'd be ticked off too and demand my cut. Especially if I lived with 'manure stained streets and no running water'.
>>>Romanian villagers, I say this with all due respect: grow the hell up.>>>
You say from your nice comfy home with a bathtub and hot water...
'If Michael Moore pulled this kind of thing--- taking people out of context and misrepresenting himself in order to manipulate them in order to make him rich--- which is essentially what Moore does do in "Roger and Me" and his other movies-- then people (at least conservatives) wouldn't be so easy on him."
One is a spoof and a comedy and the other claims to be a documentary. Why not compare night and day? Compare it to a Scary Movie or an Airplane spoof and you'd be spot on. By all accounts a funny movie and I will always err on the side of anything that is not pc.
In all fairness to frat boys, after the first few drinks it probably didn't take much to dupe them.
Did she not notice that they were putting huge silicon breasts on her?
Sounds like they were happy they got paid what seemed like a generous sum in the local business climate ($13 or something) and now have had some local lawyer tell them they deserve millions because the movie's rolling in the bucks.
Get a job, you stupid Romanians.
Your enjoy their poverty, and enjoy making fun of them, what else. They are crap, their lives are crap, lets rub their faces in it. What joy! Lets lie to them, pretend to be their friend. It is okay they have no rights we have to respect!
....how would you feel it if was you?
I wouldn't be that stupid, nor do I have closet racisim or prejudice feelings that would come out if I thought the movie would be shown only outside of the U.S. I don't feel bad for the frat boys - I do feel for the Romanians, but to be looking for huge payout because the movie is doing well is a bit cynical.
I saw the opening of the movie on youtube and anyone in the terrible circumstances these people were in might take money to do such degrading things. If you liked "bumfights" and thought that exploiting desperate people was funny, I suppose you would love "Borat".
The seventy year old lady had a right to not sign a waiver, get fake boobs put on her, and stand in front of a camera for laughs. She had a right not to take the money they offered her to do it.
Don't be so paternalistic and condescending. They are poor but they are adults. They made a decision to be in the goofy movie and I suspect they were happy with the money they were given at the time.
Now they got a lawyer, call themselves victims, and try to squeeze more bucks out of the production company, which is their right too I guess.
Whoa there buddy. Relax. I'm sure they don't think they're lives are crap. They may want what we have, but they still manage to make it. As for their rights, those are not our concern. It is up to them to better their state.
"Your enjoy their poverty, and enjoy making fun of them, what else."
Yeah, that's exactly what said, I "enjoy" their poverty - why don't you get a life and while you're at it get a sense of humor. I read the article and have seen the trailer and it made me chuckle. Let's not go overboard.
Don't know for sure, this guy seems to be a "Michael Moore" style "comedian"
More like 3 Euros.
This whole things reminds me of Charlie Rangel "Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?
"Borat" does in fact expose the dark side of some key members of the Republican "Big Tent", so it isn't surprising some FReepers would hate it. I wouldn't call the movie PC, exactly. The only major PC-like fault I see is the total avoidance of mentioning Islam - a major force in Central Asia. It seems that a real Kazakh TV reporter would have a few choice things to say about Muslims as well as Jews.
