I don't think it has so much to do with pride, as to what purpose would it serve the nation. They were gunning for him and through him the war on terror.

Rumsfeld is too proud to get grillings from the likes of Waxman.Heh. I don't think he's proud exactly, I see him as rather humble. But he doesn't suffer fools gladly, and he has to know he is ten times the man any 'rat congresscritter (like Leaky Leahy or Henry Nostrilitis) will ever be.
