The first order of responsibility lies with the Republican congress and the President who squandered the opportunity to lead, and not act like democrats lite. The voters did their duty to put them in office for that purpose in the first place. So while I think it was a serious mistake for the voters to do what they did, they are not the primary cause.

As I said before, conservatives staying home is like a person who caught the flu from a friend, is so mad at his friend that he goes out in the cold to catch life threatening pneumonia -- that'll show the friend.

I agree with DB. And the more I think about what happened, I'm staggered by the consequences. We lost four sound conservative Senators: Santorum, Allen, Talent, and Burns. Their Dim successors will be safely in office for at least six years, and making up that deficit of 4 Senate seats is not going to be easy. The Dims may have a lock on the Senate for years to come. Good-bye to that last Supreme Court conservative that we need. It's simply a disaster.

You are right.
Two words I could add that voters intensely dislike: arrogance and corruption. It kept Al Gore and John Kerry from the Presidency and just swept out the Republican 'leadership' in Congress. That is the real message and I'm amazed that even some FReepers can't see that--but choose to blame the 'Perot voters.' Those voters got Bush in, both times.
However, the same sea of anger that swept the Democrats in will sweep them out if they don't deliver. This Congress is in for hell because this time the values voters will be watching their every move and hassling them every chance they get. I know I will be. I hope every one who posts on this forum will do the same.

Thank you for focusing the blame where it ought to be if the problem is to be fixed. Blaming disgruntled conservatives is NOT going to bring them back on board. We simply can not afford to have the GOP think that they have a divine right to our vote.

We lost about 25 conservative seats in the House. The conservatives who stayed home in those districts are to blame.
It can't get much simpler than that.
