Outcome Uncertain in 8 House Races
Breitbart.com ^ | November 10, 2006 | Philip Elliot

Eight House races remain without winners after Tuesday's election, with Republican incumbents in tight contests to keep their seats and state officials not rushing to end the dispute.

Rep. Deborah Pryce, a member of the House Republican leadership, is ahead in her central Ohio race by 3,536 votes. In the Columbus, Ohio- area, elections officials are delaying the count of more than 9,000 provisional ballots by one day so it doesn't disrupt the much-vaulted Ohio State-Michigan football game on Nov. 18.

Elections officials in that district will start counting Nov. 19.

Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, who called Democratic Rep. John Murtha a coward, is ahead of her challenger by 2,862 votes. Rep. Barbara Cubin, who threatened to slap her wheelchair-bound Libertarian opponent after a debate, is ahead by fewer than a thousand votes in her Wyoming contest.

Of the eight uncalled races, only one _ Joe Courtney's challenge to Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in Connecticut _ gives a Democratic challenger the lead. In that race, Courtney is ahead by a scant 166 votes. Almost a quarter of a million votes were cast.

A Thursday recount in Hebron, Conn., gave Simmons one more vote. Recounts were scheduled in 74 other towns through the weekend.

In Florida, a recount is set to begin Wednesday in Rep. Katherine Harris' former district. Republican Vern Buchanan has a 373-vote lead and has declared victory over Democrat Christine Jennings. The Associated Press has declared Buchanan the winner.

In Georgia, first-term Democratic Rep. John Barrow, facing a rematch against former Republican Rep. Max Burns, leads by fewer than 600 votes.

In Washington state, the count in a suburban Seattle district was delayed by heavy flooding, leaving incumbent Republican Rep. Dave Reichert ahead of challenger Darcy Burner three days after voting ended.

Other races that remain undecided include North Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes' campaign against Larry Kissell, separated by 449 votes; and New Mexico Rep. Heather Wilson's race, where Democrat Patricia Madrid trails by about 1,600 votes.

an the House override a POTUS veto?

If the GOP stays true to the President neither house nor senate can get anywhere near the 2/3rds required for overriding a Presidential veto.

Well that is a good question. I don't think there are many that would. Most of those who might lost election night. If I were the Democrats I'd worry about Jon Tester and Jim Webb. I'm sure one of them could be courted to caucus with the GOP if enough was put on the table for them.

The smaller their margin the greater the chance of us taking it back in 2 years and they know it.

Lampson has represented part of this CD 22 before; people there are more liberal than many think, but most just don't know how to write in a candidate. It's too tough a task for them.

No - she NEVER called him a coward.

MR. RUSSERT: As you know, the response on the House floor was extraordinary. Congresswoman Jean Schmidt of Ohio said that she had talked to a state representative in Ohio, also a former Marine, and she relayed the following message. Let's watch.

(Videotape, November 18, 2005):

REP. JEAN SCHMIDT, (R-OH): He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body...

With respect to number 36:

"To: All
"People, relax. The ONLY thing that has to change is
the GOP run squeaky clean candidates -- and find some
scandal on Democrats -- and the result reverses.

Pay attention to the exit polls. The #1 issue of
voters was corruption scandals. Not conservatism. Not
liberalism. Corruption.

Get squeaky clean and the rightward bias of the US as
a whole will return Congress to the GOP.

This won't work. Recall that both Tom DeLay and Trent Lott were brought down by "scandals" which were obvious fakes. These two were the two most powerful figures in Congress. No one is "squeaky clean" enough to prevent scandals, when the scandals can be obviously false charges brought by a corrupt prosecuter, or "outrage" which is proclamed against someone for the fault of a kind remark, when there was no "outrage" against the person the remark addressed.

By controlling the majority, Democrats are now in a position to issue subpoenas, hold hearings, and pass censures, which will give the phoney scandals more vermisilitude. If they've been able to fool the public in the past, they will be more able to fool people now.

Besides the complete fakes, there are bound to be some actual actions which can be made to look like scandals with a little lying. I did see a statement from someone speaking for the Democratic party (I forget who), which stated that the money paid by Abramov to Republicans was scandalous, but that the money he paid to Democrats was just fine. They've been able to sell this sort of absurdity in the past.

Plus there are bound to be a few actual scandals which can be found with dedicated investigation--which the Democrats will apply.

The Republican Party is in trouble. Get set for a blizzard of "scandals".

The situation is not hopeless. Recall the endless "scandals" of the Reagan administration. (Note also that the sum total of actual substance behind them all was that a Lieutennant Colonel actually lied to Congress [for good reason, but it was still illegal].) Republicans have been able to function in the face of a blizzard of phony scandals before--not without some damage, but without being totally disabled. The party may need to recover that ability.

The other factor which makes the current situation more favorable than the 1980s is that there are now news outlets and ways of disseminating information which are willing to circulate actual facts (this forum, for example). I expect that the Republican party will need to give much more attention to pushing information out through channels which haven't been so corrupted that they will refuse to spread it, but possible ways do exist.

LOL.......the educated elite journalists who lecture the rest of us because we're sooo dumb.

Yes, it would be nice if someone would let this "educated" AP putz know that the word is "VAUNTED," not "VAULTED."

What a bunch of half-assed journalistic hacks.

How would a football game be disrupted by election officials doing their jobs?

Lol! I was thinking the same thing. What difference does the game make? They can't count the votes because of a game that's a week away?

You guys are responding incorrectly. The voters already were measured. Corruption scandals is why they voted as they did.

1) Who died and made you god of our responses?

2) Is that you Bill P.?

3) Can you produce these "measures"?

It does not matter what you think is important because there is no need to rely on your opinion. We have the data in the exit polls.

ROTFLOL!!! (spit!)
