Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, whose party just lost both chambers of Congress, will leave his position in January, and the post as party chief has been offered to Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele. "It is true," Mr. Mehlman told The Washington Times when asked about reports last night that he would resign. "It's something I decided over the summer. No one told me I needed to. In fact, folks wanted me to stay."
Mr. Mehlman said he "told the White House over the summer it was my decision" to leave the RNC post, "win, lose or draw."
Also last night, Republican officials told The Times that Mr. Steele, who lost his bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, has been sought out to succeed Mr. Mehlman as national party chairman. Those Republican officials said Mr. Steele had not made a decision whether to take the post, as of last night.

If Delay had cleared his legal problems with Ronnie Earl then I would be the first person rooting for him. How much of this loss can be laid at the feet of losing Delay at a crucial time?

late 50s early 60's. It all went to he!! after Kennedy was assinated and then the hippy generation took over with free love and all the Vietnam war protests. Too many people dont' remember a time when you could send kids out to play and not have to worry that someone was kidnapping or raping them, they didn't try to brainwash us in school, rather actually taught us something and if you screwed off the teachers had power to do something about it...

I just did some reading on Steele I was too harsh on him even tho I 100% disagree with his views on on Iraq I'll support him and the Republicans

when you could send kids out to play
I managed to do that in the early '80's - somehow. Must have been the neighborhood.
Agreed completely in terms of any sense of "community" since then, however. We've permanently lost the Public Sector, barring massive layoffs.
Retain a bit of circumspection about the kids, however. Young couples birthing chillen' might be more conservative than you would expect. 'Mericans, despite their political stupidity, might still have a sense of Right and Wrong. Buck up, FRiend!
And God Bless You!

Rove made the decision to support Lincoln Chafee in the primaries against a conservative challenger.
Chafee lost and has said he will consider becoming a Democrat so he can run for office again.
I also didn't appreciate GWB lying to us about Rumsfeld before the election.

Personally, it became abundantly clear to me in Jan. 2005 within a few days after President Bush started his second term that the GOP quietly brought in Jo Ann Davidson, who had 'handed him Ohio' and was given the 'co-chair'position of the GOP, next to Michelman. Davidson is a pro-abortion advocate and 'gay marriage supporter'.
http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/jan/05012003.html This was the answer we were given as to what the GOP thought of its Conservative members. It wasn't conservatives the GOP wanted to move into the big camp. We became as an embarrassment to the GOP. In our state's GOP many conservatives lost their positions and weren't welcome to help the GOP.
I held my nose and voted Republican, but I can see how many states, who offered up prolife, conservative Democrats, how conservatives would switch their votes, seeing the weak Republican politician they had in their state. The 2002 and 2004 election was a chance for the GOP to prove what they could do socially, fiscally and militarily. We can't continue saying we are pro-life when not given a clear reason why over 3,000 of our soldiers have died, not to exclude the countless innocent Iraqi lives.
We are Christians. We follow Christ, not the RNC, and if the RNC continues to act like they are ashamed of the Christians, you will continue to see the 'dust being shaken from our feet.'

This is a smart move on the Republicans part. Rush said yesterday that the Dems are considering that little, redneck hypocrite, Harold Ford Jr. to replace Howard Dean!!!!

Good question about loss of Delay but I don't think his absence as much as his legal problems had an impact.
GOP still spent wildly under him, he even famously claimed in 2005 there was no fat in the budget! He was able to get votes needed for bills but that didn't seem to be a problem after he left.

How freaky.
I saw 2 people here on FR say we should try to get Steele to take the RNC position and get rid of Melhman.
