RNC asks Steele to replace Mehlman
The Washington Times ^ | November 10, 2006 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 11/09/2006 11:31:27 PM PST by icwhatudo

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, whose party just lost both chambers of Congress, will leave his position in January, and the post as party chief has been offered to Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele. "It is true," Mr. Mehlman told The Washington Times when asked about reports last night that he would resign. "It's something I decided over the summer. No one told me I needed to. In fact, folks wanted me to stay."

Mr. Mehlman said he "told the White House over the summer it was my decision" to leave the RNC post, "win, lose or draw."

Also last night, Republican officials told The Times that Mr. Steele, who lost his bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, has been sought out to succeed Mr. Mehlman as national party chairman. Those Republican officials said Mr. Steele had not made a decision whether to take the post, as of last night.

Initially, I thought, Good move,, now after some thought, I hope he refuses both this and any subsequent role he might be offered in the current administration and party..

my gut feel is I seriously doubt that he will ever be adequately rewarded if he were to accept either role and be successful and frankly, there is no guarantee that success would ensue within the current political climate and power structure we have today in the party.. jmo

I have no idea, really. I've seen HUD and also something in the State Dept. I'd rather see him in something in foreign affairs if he is wanting to seek a national office. HUD would lend him some administrative credit.

Newt is running for President, he wouldn't want this. Steele has charisma and ran a brilliant campaign. From what I heard on Fox yesterday, if the hispanics had been willing to vote for a black man he would have won.

You're right. Correct or not, politically, jumping in with Bush right now would not serve any future aspirations he might have.

Hispanics don't vote for blacks? What's up with that?

As far as Newt is concerned, I LOVE the guy, but does anyone really think he can even make it through the primary?

When Ken "purse strings" Mehlman called me to donate, I gave him heck about pulling the old democrat trick of just trying to scare people.
The entire thing was just like the democrats saying " Republicans want to hurt women, children and the elderly".
His was "vote Republican or Nancy will be house leader".
He would not support most Conservatives.
I call for "Purse Strings" to step down.

I'll support the guy as along as he stays out of Newt's way and don't talk that dumb Northeast Moderate stuff like he did when he ran for senate

We also need a guy who isn't a walking PR disaster, which is exactly what Newt is. Didn't you learn anything from 1996?

Steele is the opposite of that. He was also the former Party Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party.

Make it through the primary? Who cares if he can make it through the primary? He couldn't even win Georgia in a Presidential race.

I liked Newt until he shook Clinton's hand and helped him win reelection.

Blackwell for Cabinent. Steele for Chairman. Steele's been Maryland's Party Chairman before. He's got more experience in that area.

Well, we get the news out of Los Angeles here, and I will tell you if another riot breaks out there it's going to be blacks against hispanics or vis versa. My BIL is an OC California Sheriff who is in charge of transportation to and from the courts... they spend hours determining who goes on what bus to what court because you cannot mix certain groups and certain races...

Graf could have taken Kolbes seat if the RNC had not pulled the funding at the very beginning, they didn't want a closed border candidate and refused to support him. These are the things that didn't endear Mehlman to me.
