"Dr. Robert Michael Gates (born September 25, 1943) served as Director of Central Intelligence from November 6, 1991 until January 20, 1993, capping a 26-year career in the CIA and the National Security Council. He is currently the President of Texas A&M University and the National President of the National Eagle Scout Association. He and his wife Becky have two children"

Has he ever been in the military?? Inquiring minds want to know. I personally am a big fan of Donald Rumsfeld and I thank him for his total dedication in his service to our country for many, many, many years.

Pinging the Rummy gals.

You do recognize the possibility that Rummy insisted this time on his resignation? He had offered it before as I'm sure you know and the Pres refused it.

SOD Rumsfield is a cut above most everyone in the cabinet but he is 72 years old working under more pressure than anyone except the president himself. Just maybe, he was really ready to leave. Maybe he was fed up with being everyone's whipping post. I expect we'll know the full story one day but until we do, I won't have a knee jerk reaction.

Exactly...I couldn't agree more...in fact during the changeover ceremony this afernoon, Rummy to me looked almost relieved...this has been a hard burden to bear, especially for a man of 72yrs..........God Bless you Rummy!

I think it was a purely political decision. The President I voted for wouldn't have thrown Rummy to the wolves. President Bush is pandering. And it's only going to get worse.

" Don't play poker with George Bush " I stopped reading posts here. This cuts to the heart of the matter. Bush has something up his sleeve. The fact he already had a nominee in place speaks volumes.

What's wrong with you people?

Nothing's wrong with us.

If you don't think the President is a politician first, you need to open your eyes. The last two years have been nothing more than squandered opportunities and butt covering in Washington. When you have the largest bully pulpit in the world and you refuse to use it because of media backlash and low opinion ratings, you are NOT in any way doing what is best for this country.

My read: Mr. Rumsfeld seeing the writing on the wall with the incoming Dem House basically saying FU I ain't going through 2 years of continual harping and hearings.

You are of course entitled to think whatever you want.

Sounds like you should change your screen name now if you think he is pandering and going to get worse. :o)

It's puzzling that you reject the notion that Rummy insisted on his resignation this time without knowing any more than we do. However, I'm not going to argue about circumstances we are not privy to.

Frist was/is an embarrassment and Denny isn't much better ... the GOP can't stand on ceremony with a sense of entitlement.

Hopefully they've learned their lessons and send NEW candidates into the elections next cycle.
