We Did Not Just Lose Our Majority, We Lost Our Way
Humans Events Online ^ | 11/08/06 | Rep. Mike Pence

Election Day 2006 will be remembered as a turning point in American political history. Twenty-five years after the Reagan Administration came to Washington with a conservative agenda of limited government, the American people chose a different course.

It is the duty of the losing party in a free election to humbly accept defeat and to acknowledge that the people are sovereign in the People's House.

As we examine the results of this election, it is imperative that we listen to the American people and learn the right lessons.

Some will argue that we lost our majority because of scandals at home and challenges abroad. I say, we did not just lose our majority, we lost our way.

It is the duty of the losing party in a free election to humbly accept defeat

And nobody humbly accepts defeat better than the Republicans. The media homogenizes politics. There is really little difference between the Republican and Democratic leadership's vision of what sort of society we should be, mostly there are just tactical differences in how to get there. They both believe in the politically correct society as broadly laid out by the mass media, the Democrats because they want to, the Republicans because they have to. The Republicans hoped to obscure that fact with the war in Iraq, but perpetual war for perpetual power was always a nonstarter, something a less desperate group might have recognized.

Maybe that's sad, but it's fact, and until Republicans deal with it they will be a mess.

Exactly. But they won't.

We failed to promote leaders, and lost as a result.

A leader is a person who can convince people to do things that they might not otherwise do on their own. Ronald Reagan is a perfect example because he had to convince a Democratic majority in both Houses to follow his path. In contrast, our Congressional leaders were not even able keep our own party in-line and on-track let alone the Democrats. Leadership sometimes means twisting arms. It means telling people like Chaffee, Snow, Stevens, and others that "if you want to run as a Republican, you need to act as a Republican, otherwise, don't expect the party to support your re-election, don't expect the big corner office in the Senate office building, don't expect extra money for extra staff, don't expect the committee chairmanship that you have been drooling over for years, and don't expect your pet legislation to see the light of day. Get with the program, and if you don't like it, then elect someone else majority leader." Instead of putting up with losers like Tom the "pork farmer" Delay, the rank and file should have elected leaders who were more interested in promoting the interests of the party than handing out goodies to friends and wasting our hard earned tax dollars on home district projects that have nothing to do with the national interest and everything to do with buying votes.

"...renew our commitment to limited government, national defense, traditional values and reform."

I believe more cogent, result-oriented national policies must emerge too, such as a commitment to energy independence, and immigration reform.

Republicans did not toot their own horn well, from W on down. So true. If Bush had made an effort like the one Clinton made to to toot his own horn, we'd have won this election. That's why Bush and the Pubbies ought to look carefully at what Clinton did to undermine the Pubbie Congressional majority and use the most effective parts of that strategy.

LOL!!! The Republican Party that lost yesterday was *not* a Reaganesque, conservative party.
