unpopular war?
gee, since when was war or hard work popular?
It's not war, it's plowshare discipline the liberals love to make hated. Military involvement is only a dedtail of a war...
Fred Barnes was one of the elites who were calling the conservative base nativist kooks on the amnesty and open borders issue.
It was this in-your-face treatment by Beltway insiders like him that turned off the conservative voters and made them stay home.
Barnes, go look in a mirror before you start blaming others.
This party has only begun to self destruct.....
This was the most disappointing thing for me, but in some ways it might be a good thing in that it brings home to local and state governments the realization that the federal government cannot be relied upon to solve all problems. They are, in fact, the problem in many cases. Immigration, education, and energy will have to be addressed at the local and state levels because Washington has demonstrated its inability and unwillingness to tackle any issues which have the potential of threatening their incumbencies.
>>Not much to add...should be an interesting 2 years with (hopefully) a recharged Right in time for 2008...<<
Yup.. This could be a good thing in the long run. If housing tanks, and the economy with it, as much as I suspect it will in 2007-2008, this could be a VERY good thing.
Nancy's top priority is to raise the minimum wage. That should be all you need to know about how important the war is to them.
IMHO, the dims realized that in order to survive they had to move to the center in at least a few areas. Lampson in TX, Webb in VA, and a few others are examples. But the overall lesson of our defeat is that WE WERE NOT FIRED UP ENOUGH TO FIGHT! I talking to that guy who looks at me in the mirror every morning. We have been too complacent, too confident, too stingy with our contributions. I swear that between today and 2008, I will get in the game and knock some heads. The war will be won or lost at the ballot box. This war WILL go on for the next 50-100 years. We lost a political battle; we will not lose the war.
It looks to me like country wants middle of the road people in office.
Two HUGE ISSUES really worry me: Iraq and the illegals. Will the RATs screw them both up forever?
OTOH, losing seats in a midterm is the historical norm. That a president who barely won both his elections against repulsive opponents held on until his 6th year is pretty darn good. I don't think this election sent a message to anybody.
Why the postmortem?? If you take a look at the results from previous 6th year midterms, the 6 year itch, this was hardly the resounding victory that the Dems seem to think it is. Even if there wasn't a war in iraq, and even if this congress hadnt been the laziest, greediest most venal congress we have ever seen, the 6th year midterm should still see the party in opposition take seats.
This is as "bad" as it gets. No party in a democracy can rule all the time. But here we are, the liberal media painting Bush as the worst president ever, nothing but bad news when it comes to republicans, mix in the historic "6 year itch" factor and yet , still the dems cant even take back the senate?? This is good bad news. This election was always going to be the low point, and yet, thanks to the Dems being a useless bunch of know-nothing say-nothing blowhards with no message and no direction for this country, the low point is not very low at all, and the climb back up is not going to be very difficult.
Did Diana Irey beat that traitor Murtha? I could not find any reference to the race on the web and that's strange.
The Democrats won by running on no agenda at all.
BS. Repubs lose because the media won't report anything good about us. They deny us our voice. Re Iraq, the economy, and much more. The R's really need better PR (Tony Snow is good but need more). And BUYING a major news outlet would be the best thing. Conservatives believe in private property - why have we not put our money where our mouth is on this?
I love George W Bush, really. But when I voted for him, I didn't realize how very important his two 'blind spots' - immigration and communication - would become. I'm still glad HE was on deck when 9/11 hit. I support the war in Iraq, but think we should take the gloves off. I know many R's/conservatives feel the same way. Do it - and TELL US you're doing it. Hah! if the media let you!
I'm depressed, but trust in God for a silver lining... someday.
Here is my take, the MSM successfully worked with the DNC to take multiple scalps. I believe there is a long list of Republicans that bit the dust from non-stop MSM focus on a variety of behaviors from saying 'macaca' to marital infidelity. You have to give them credit, they were able to convince the Republican base to stay home, and get the swing voters to whack-a-mole the key races. Delay and Foley were both rolled. I am quite impressed that they essentially pulled every one of their stunts off this time.
The Republican's are essentially handicapped every race thanks to the MSM cheerleading and sniping for the Dems. Will this be the case 2 years from now? Will the alternative media be capable of reaching as many people as the MSM in 2 years? If not, it will be a long slog to overcome this highly efficient machine.
My predictions are that Bush will be boxed in and starved out by the Dem congress and MSM. He will eventually capitulate to them on Iraq, and he will gladly hand them amnesty on illegals. The next supreme will be his appointment but they will bless it (think O'conner). The only X-factor on impeachment proceedings (or endless sniping of the President in congress) is if the new conservative Dems refuse to toe the party line. If they got in by saying they wouldn't impeach and flip-flop, will it matter to their voters with the MSM covering for them? The Dems are salivating for a Watergate pay-back-for-Clinton moment. We could certainly see a repeat of the early 70's with Bush / Iraq replacing Nixon / Vietnam. And unlike Clinton, the MSM dogs of war will be running full bore on taking out Bush.
I will also predict that electronic voting irregularities and the accompanying lawyers will vanish like mist now that the Dems won. On a positive note we won't have to go through the repeat of seeing them flip Lincoln Chafee (won't miss him) like they did Jeffords. It is definitely going to be an entertaining 2 years. The Republicans better come up with something fast or we may all be seeing Hillary crowned in 2008.
Well, without reading the whole thing (at work, no time) let me just say that there is a big difference between the Korean War, the Vietnam War and now. The difference being neither the Koreans nor the Vietnamese were about to come over here and kill us. That's just not true of the Islamofacists.
But hey, to borrow a line from Micheal Moore, the next time NYC gets hit, at least they'll deserve it. And I was born and raised there.
It's even easier than that. We looked too much like Democrats.
As for the war, Bush made the same mistake his father did. It irritated me(I would like to use stronger language, but...) in 1990, 1991, and again in 1993. When you go to war, you must declare war, so the weasels cannot easily stab you in the back. If we had declared war in 1990, it would have been much easier to have ignored Powell and destroyed the Republican Guard when they should have been destroyed. That would have prevented what we have now.
My concern is , after amnesty for the parasitic infiltrators is passed and signed by the president, will it be possible for a President Tancrado to repeal it in 08? You can't take amnesty back!
