You're assuming the Democrats will behave rationally. Their base hates Bush and wants him gone. And they have to pay at least lip service to their kooks. At some point, I presume they will press ahead with an impeachment vote.

Based on what? That they hate him? That won't wash, he's committed no high crime or misdemeanor! Heck we had Clinton dead to rights on perjury under oath, suborning perjury, abuse of power with an intern and committing a lewd and lascivious act in a public place, and we couldn't convict him.

I don't expect impeachment, they know that is suicide given there is little for them to use to back it up...

However, I do believe they will not make permanent the tax cuts, they will pursue nationalized health-care, they will attempt to force Bush's hand to bring the troops home before Iraq is ready to take the reins. Lastly, they will attempt to sabotage Bush at every step in hopes of capturing the Whitehorse in 2008.

The greatest of these issues I believe is Iraq...handing Iraq over to Al Queda and Iran will only embolden them in the region....it will only be a matter of time before Lebanon and Afghanistan fall away as well.

By the time the electorate wakes up and realizes how important Iraq was to the WOT we will have lost a great deal. Yes, the argument can be made it wasn't before the invasion, but there is no doubt it is now.

This election serves notice to all of our allies in the region that we, as a nation, are not comitted to seeing the struggle through, it will have a huge impact on how much cooperation we get from "friendly governments" in the region. In addition, it certainly will impact our troops in the field when it comes to the cooperation they receive from the citizenry of Iraq and Afghanistan....thier mission has just become that much more dangerous...

I'm not optimistic this morning, I feel the same gloom I felt when Carter won...fortunately we were rescued by Reagan after four years of hell....

Unfortunately, I do not see a new Reagan on the horizon, and today the stakes are so much higher...
