Webb defeats Allen by 2,200 votes
I'm praying to God this won't happen, and I don't think it will, because in 1974, you had a VERY weak Republican President and a HUGE D majority in both houses of Congress. None of that is so now.
I do worry that Republicans will go wobbly now though, especially with weirdos like the supposedly Conservative Walter Jones.
"Allen's political career is over. What a putz."
Over rated to begin with.
If Allen has any guts he will contest, question is does he have what it takes to fight?
When the canvasses are done and the vote is certified, if there is a chance of recovery, Allen will contest.
But to be quite honest, I don't see us recovering 8,000 votes through the absentees or a recount. And if the margin is that wide after the vote is certified, I hope we don't push for a recount.
This has been a long and ugly year. There comes a point when we have to face reality.
If there's ~any~ consolation in this, I think when the RATS wake up from their celebration hangover, they won't like Senator Webb anymore than we will.
Tell that to the VFW and Vietnam/Gulf War Veterans, both of which endorsed George Allen.
You win the prize for clarity.
That is exactly, EXACTLY correct.
Did we win in Montana? Are we going to hold the Senate?
No and no.
God bless you for being George Allen's strongest supporter on FR, Corin, but I just can't see how it's going to happen unless he's got a bloody miracle up his sleeve. There's only six precincts left and they're generally smaller, except for the Loudoun absentees and that's not going to be a mine of votes for the Allen camp.
Senator Allen made some mistakes, I'll grant that, but honestly, the media broke him in this state. By taking every single thing he did wrong and amplifying it a thousand times--and by publishing baseless, scurrilous charges like those of him being a racist at UVa thirty-five years ago (charges made by a radical anti-smoking Democratic activist, which the DBM NEVER told you)--they gave Born Idiot the push he needed to get over the top. Webb didn't win this election on the issues because he never talked much about the issues. He's a zero, a cipher, a nothing.
Plain and simple, the Washington Compost and the DC media macaca'd George Allen out of a job.

With all the talk of the absentee ballots and military vote--do you happen to know if they are alreay included in those totals?
Please remove me from your George Allen ping. I no longer believe he is presidential material. He ran a terrible campaign and I have no intentions of supporting someone who can't even carry his own state.
Most of the asbsentees are already in.
I am the keeper of the list. You're no longer on it.
Too bad...it was a good run but in the end Allen could beat Webb, but he couldn't beat the media. That was my fear from the get-go.
Win or lose Allen is finished nationaly.
That hurts, but God's still in control, and we have to soldier on.
Some say absentee ballots are counted and some say they are not. Which is it???
Sen. Allen made some mistakes, but nothing like it's been portrayed on FR. He is a freshman senator in an evenly split state (except for Presidential elections) who only won last time with 52% of the vote. Had FReepers simply supported him, as he deserved, we wouldn't be staring at his likely defeat right now. But for the most part they didn't.
Oh yeah, it's all the GOP's fault. < / sarcasm >
On the other hand, I was pleasantly suprised with Drake's win in the 2nd dist. Moveon.org started running ads on TV trashing her back in March, and all the local media was on the Kellam bandwagon.
Yes, I was glad for Drake--but my favorite race of the night was VA-05 where Goode totalled smoked Weed.
