Tonight should put an end to the "If the GOP would just run a real conservative, we'd win every time" rant, shouldn't it?
Who has ever said "we'll win every time" with a conservative candidate? All I know is that the GOP was a minority party until it nominated a conservative - Reagan - for president. A lot of conservative Republicans are losing tonight - and a lot of liberal Republicans are losing tonight (think Chafee, DeWine, Nancy Johnson). It's a bad night to run as a Republican, unfortunately.

I can only surmise this was a national election, not local. The Dem candidates did not espouse any vision or set of goals that I know of - anywhere. In fact, they mostly ran non-descript folks with military or conservative veneers to stand next to the GOP opponent (whether they be conservative or RINO or moderate or whatever) and say "the only difference is we are not with George Bush".
Does anyone realize gas prices are down, the economy is booming, we have good new judges, etc? It has to be all about Iraq, has to be. That's all I can figure, the rest is a mystery to me.
