The moderates will step up that theme. The only lesson they learn is the exact opposite of what disgruntled conservatives want to teach them.
The republicans can not win with out social conservatives. Deal with it
We can't "get rid of" the social conservatives, we need them to win.
But they need to realize that they are not now and will never be a majority, and the most they can get out of politics is a smaller government with a less intrusive role, improving their chances to be left alone to raise their children as they see fit.
They can only govern in coalition with libertarians and fiscal conservatives. The alternative is socialism.
Karl Rove has created this night. His "base" has grown as big as it will ever get, and in so doing has split off the libertarians and fiscal conservatives.
It's a losing strategy and it has to be changed.
