Right -- a world in which the people had been thru *real* hard times, a previous major war (WWI) and a great depression.
Now, people have had it so easy, that they are ignorant of 'real' bad times, of a 'real' military disaster.
Our troubles always consume us, no matter how minor those troubles are. It's human nature.
No, I don't think that's it at all. I blame it on A) leftist public school administrations across the country that do any- and everything to remove any semblance of patriotism from our schools (not to mention learning about our national heritage), B) an ultra-left mass media (no need to explain that one further here on this Forum...), and C) an even further left mass entertainment industry.
All combine to make Americans, especially youth....stupid, ignorant (yes, there's a difference), and anti-American.
